Florida Winter Am Series presented by FMF Round 3 : Motocross of Marion County rhythm se ct ion just befo re the finish line to secure the overal l. It was an exciting ending to a fantast ic race for Str o upe , and his win gave him a one -point edge ove r Izzi heading to the pen ult im at e ro u nd a t T hund e rcro ss in O keech obee. WMR/ARS Powe rspo rtsl Shift·backed Shaun Skinner wo n the first two rou nds of the 2S0cc Pro class and enjoyed a somewh at comfortable e ight-p o int ma rg in ove r Team Gre e n' s Chisho lm he ading into Redd ick. After ta king the first -mota win by some four seconds over C hisho lm , Skinne r ap pear e d t o be in t he driver's seat for the coveted Winter Am title but a hard get-off wh ile running fourt h about halfway t hrough t he second mo t o and his subsequent eighth -ov erall finish left him fo ur points do wn on Chisholm with two rounds to eN go in the series. Stroupe Takes One from Izzi MOTOCROSS OF MARION COUNTY REDDICK, FLORIDA REsulJ5: JANUARY 10- 11, 2004 (ROUND 3) Jarre" Tipping (141) ba"le5 Lee Tatham (641) in the Over 2S conte5t at round three of the Florida Winter Am5. By JEFF LAYMAN REDDICK, FL, JAN. 10·11 D o und three of the 33rd annual Winter Am I'series went to Motocro ss of Marion Cou nty. a tra ck that gives the ser ies regulars a vastty different challe nge than they faced at the first two ro unds the high-spe ed hills of Gatorback and the brutally ro ugh sand at Dade City. The > red-clay circuit is famou s for placing a prem ium on th rottl e con trol and getting good sta rts. Wh ile par ity ru led the Pro classes, with Kyle Chisho lm and Teddy Maier sta nding atop the pod ium for the first time in the series . many of t he Amateur divisions co nt inue d to feature grea t b att le s among t he future st a r s of motocross. At Reddick, th e always-competitive Supermini class showcased anoth er epic due l betw een Michigan's Nica lu i and North Ca rolina's Au stin Strou pe. Com i ng into Sund ay ' s firs t m oto , Izzi appeared set to co ntinue his utt er do minance of the class, as he was o n the gas in pract ice and had swept all four previ ous motes in th e series . He got 011 the gate beh ind fe llow Suzuki Jell Alessi was also competing at Mesq uite , and he was easy to find, as he spen t all day out in front . In 250ec Inter med iate act ion, Alessi nailed th e c pen lng-mc to holes hot, leading Je ll Page, Chad Geib and Kenny Mart in. Aless i pushed the pace , while Page and Geib were battl ing bar to bar (or seco nd. Alessi won race one easy as a breeze , while Page earned a solid second. In mo te tw o , Alessi once again le d t he Intermediate s, as Martin and Geib gave chase . Al essi was flying out in fr ont. w hile Page had to fight his way forward to second place. Alessi's dou ble wire -to -w ire tr iumphs ea rned him the ove rall 2S0cc Interm ediate trophy, whi le Page finished second, ahea d of Geib and Martin. RESULT5 P/W STK (4 -6) : I . P/W pilot Ben Lamay, with Strou pe right on his rea r fende r. lui grabbed the lead o n lap three and went o n to win by just ove r one second ahe ad of Stroupe. It was a familiar resu lt for the two , as Stroupe had often bee n right in lu i's roos t at the end of the moto throughout the series' first two rou nds. Izzi sto mpe d t he ho le shot in mo to two , w it h St ro upe once again righ t be hind, and it looked like lu i was on his way to another two mota swe e p. Ho weve r, th is t ime St ro upe 's de te r minatio n to stop lzzi's streak was evident , as he fo und an opening and sne aked into the lead o n the seco nd circuit. Just over a lap later, Izzi made a rare mista ke in th e right -hander right after th e finish line and crashed. Izzi's fall gave St ro up e a co mfo r t abl e le ad over O klahoma's Trey Canard, and it loo ked like he was on his way to his first overall win in the class. But Stroupe put it on cru ise co ntrol a bit too ea rly, and the very det ermined Canard ran him do w n just as the white nag came o ut. The tw o swapped the lead numerous times o n the final lap, and Stroupe sne aked by in th e final OPEN : I. Brandan Le it h (Pol); 2. J.D . Elliott (KTM); 3. Tr e nt o n Ferge n (KT M); -4 .
