to finish third , wh ile Valade capitalized on Metcalf's mistake and took t he second step on the pod ium. Metcalf got the jum p on the pack in the 250« Pro class. pulling Wood ring. Valade and Stone through tum on e. Woodring took the le ad from Metca lf w it h a great pass thro ug h the whoops , muc h to the de light of the ho m e t o w n crowd. Woodring's lead was short-lived . though: Just two laps late r. a bo bble in the whoops saw him go from first to fourth. The to p four riders we re in tight fonnation through out the race . Stone used h is arenac ross savvy a nd work ed the lappers to his advantage, openi ng up a lead th at neit her MetcaU nor Valade cou ld challenge. In the end, it was Stone crossing the line o nce again in first, with Metcalf second with a five-seco nd cushio n on Valade , w ho finished third . In t he 65« (7- I I) co ntest, Bylsma, Le w is Hunt . Codie Meyers and Dougie Moline all jumped off the starting gate and roared do wn the front stra ight and into the whoops. Moline had the lead com ing out of the whoops. w ith Lewis hot on his heels and Meyers in third. On lap two, Bylsma jumped over Meyers on the Catapult to grab third. br inging the cro wd to its feet . Moline we nt do wn in the rhythm sect ion, giving the lead to lewis, w ho rec eived the same treatment as Myers w hen Bylsma jumped into the lead for good . RESULTS 50 (7 -8 ): I. As this was the first race of the year, more than 200 co mpetitors pitte d on the north en d of this small lake , while spectators lined the shoreline surrou nding the o ne ·si xth-mile oval. In t he O pen Pro class , Jo hn "The Moo se Man" Stra ngfeld gra bbed the early lead. but a hard-charging Scott W inkle r too k t he le ad d uring th e fourt h lap. Be hin d t hose two Kawasaki jockeys, Cliff Ec ke s, o n a new 450cc Vamaha , hel d o ff t he cha rging Gerry Th rune, o n the older Retax . T he ice was o n fire as the Ope n Pros ran the ir eight- lap final. Strangfeld shrugged off the harassme nt of Winkle r to take the win, but the batt le fo r third went down to the wire, as Eckes edged o ut Luke Fox and Thrune. Winkler took the lead in the Pro Vet final and neve r looked back . Chris Daniels held third until he hit the outside snow bank, w hich allowed Th rune to get by and charge after Eckes. At the flag, Thrune was a few clicks back, giving seco nd to Eckes . Eckes came back to take the win in the 2SOc Pro final. Th e c three-way batt le for secon d went down to the line. Fox too k the outside line to get by Scott Bushman, while T.J. Ze idler stayed low to take second. Act ion was great in the two heats for the beginner s, the C clas s. Adam Bushm an he ld off Ro bert Bell e nge r and Ro bin Williams in the first heat.
