Beck, joh nson bided his time , press uring Beck
at every corner. Late in the race , johnson got
the break he was looking for w hen Be ck lost
traction and had to ru n it wide . johnson took
t he lead , and Be c k wa s unab le to mo unt a
challe nge o n the re main ing lap . At th e flag,
johnson took his first win of the season and the
overall for the day. Beck finished in second but
acqu ired e noug h po ints for the Expert 80cc GP
t itle. Barnes took t hird overall, w it h Darryl
Warr en hanging in for fourth .

dawned co ld and blustery, with sporadic, light
rain showers that ke pt tra ck conditions unpre dictable. Combining the se challenging we ather
cond it ions with the absence of a few key riders
made for a dramatic and unpre dicta ble conclusion to the Califo rnia Mot orcycle Road Racing
Association's 2003 Cham pionship Series.

Herrin. Tommy Aquino and Leonard Mellgre n.
w ho were in Spa in fo r th e World Mini GP
Festival. This left the door open for Kyle Ferr is
to take the number-one Amateu r title and for
Michae l Beck to grab the Expert 80cc GP title
on t his double-p oints seaso n closer.

quickest off the line in race one of the Expert
80cc Gp, with Skye Girard and Aaron Hamme l
in hot pursuit. O n lap two , a cold trac k and an
ove rly aggre ssive throttle spe lled disast e r for
Girard; his ride ended in a big highside out of
turn three, which brought out the red flag.
Beck grabbed the lead again on th e restart,
w it h Hamme l o nce mo re in pursult and Rich
jo hn son clo se b ehin d , w a it ing for a ny
opport unity. O n lap five, Hamme l se ize d his
chance and took the lead from Beck and held
on to take the win. jo hnson finished a strong
third, with Andrew Barnes a distant fourth.
