Fear-backed Winter Series South was played
out by a huge tur no ut of r ide rs under gorgeous, sunny Southern Califo rnia w eather con-
ditions on a perfectly prepped Perris Raceway
trac k. After a full day of rac ing. it was Eric
McCrummen and Rusty Holland who proved
to be the faste st. as they earned wins in the
I25cc and 250cc Pro classes, respectively.
At the drop of the gate for the one-shot,
20-minute 125cc Pro race, it was openinground wi nner David Pingree absconding with
the holes hot , ahead o f rook ie Pro Micky
Griffin, Scott Davis, McCrummen and Nicholas
Burson. Holla nd and Garrett Ordelman tangled
in the first turn and were well behind the field
once they got under way. The top five posit ions
remained the sam e fo r a couple of laps
before McCrummen went underneath D avis
in a sweeper for th ird place ; then he zapped
Gr iffin for second a short t ime la te r.
By lap five , McCrummen was kno cking on
Pingree 's back door, and a lap later he was
out front.
Once around Pingr e e , the Kawasaki mounted McCrummen put a second per lap on
the fie ld en ro ute to a convinci ng vict o ry.
Pingree wou ld go the distance for second place,
a handful of seconds ahead of Griffin. Holland
Rusty Holland (74) turned th is holeshot into a runaway victory
in the 250cc Pro class.

and you definitely needed a lot of luck!"
Going up a hill on the last lap ,
Black well got stuck momentar ily.
T hinking his lead w as los t, he loo ked
back and saw Scott Summers in a big rut .
'" knew from that point on that I just
had to stay out of trouble," Blackw ell
said. "I tri ed to stay moving w itho ut
getting stuck, and that was just the name
of t he game : keep mo ving w itho ut
getting stuck."
Off the start , Team Green Kawasaki's
P.A Allen got the holeshot, leading John
Maschino and nine other AA riders onto
the 9-mile course . Allen led most of the
first lap . About a mile from the score
tent, Blackwell passed him when Allen
cou ldn't make it up a hill. Allen wen t
back down and restarted his ascent, and
Summers and followed, a close third.
Blackwell led the next lap. Summers
moved into seco nd. Allen remained a
distant third.

charged the entire 20 min utes and was
rewarded wit h a fourth -place fin ish, over
Dennis Stapleton and TylerDuncan.
Ho lland exited the first turn with the lead as
t he s ingle 20-mi nu te 250cc Pro mo to go t
under way. Josh Cox sett led into second, ahead
of D unc an, Phil Lawrence and Stapleton .
McCrummen's hopes of picking up a second
class win were dashed when Davis went down
on the high-speed back straight on the open ing
lap and collected McCrummen in the process.
Up front , Holland and his CRF450R were
ste ad ily pulling away, as Lawrence stuffed his
w ay past Co x fo r second . Holland had a
comfortable IO-second cushion over Lawre nce
by the midway point, and he wou ld add a few
seconds to that by the time the checkers
waved. Cox ran in third for most of the race
before a fall dropped him to an eventual eighth.
Ordelman overcame a midpack start to earn
third -place payback, w it h Stapleton and
Duncan finis hing in fo u rt h and fifth ,
respectiv ely.
The big tur nout necessitated the running of
two divisions of 125cc Intermediates , with the
top 10 from both divisions going head to head
several times, pulling away from the rest of the
Mclass.
"It was just a parking lot in some places: '

everywhere, and sometimes you couldn't see
where you were going because there was so
much steam coming off your bike. You couldn't
even see the trail, but you had to hit the hills
wit h so much momentu m, or yo u wou ldn't
make it up the hill. It was absolutely about an
hou r and a half of complete chao s. but that's
what makes it so much fun. Doug was riding
really well , and it w as grea t, because it had
been years since he and I had a battle like that ."
Allen completed the podium. Maschino and
Gibson finished out the top five.
