GFI Racing Winter Series Sout h Round 2 : Perris Raceway McCrummen, Holland Hot at Perris By GREG ROBERTSON PERRIS, CA, JAN. 4 R o und two of the GFI Racing/Goat Eyewear/Fantasy Muffler /Pro Circuit/MolUVNo Fear-backed Winter Series South was played out by a huge tur no ut of r ide rs under gorgeous, sunny Southern Califo rnia w eather con- ditions on a perfectly prepped Perris Raceway trac k. After a full day of rac ing. it was Eric McCrummen and Rusty Holland who proved to be the faste st. as they earned wins in the I25cc and 250cc Pro classes, respectively. At the drop of the gate for the one-shot, 20-minute 125cc Pro race, it was openinground wi nner David Pingree absconding with the holes hot , ahead o f rook ie Pro Micky Griffin, Scott Davis, McCrummen and Nicholas Burson. Holla nd and Garrett Ordelman tangled in the first turn and were well behind the field once they got under way. The top five posit ions remained the sam e fo r a couple of laps before McCrummen went underneath D avis in a sweeper for th ird place ; then he zapped Gr iffin for second a short t ime la te r. By lap five , McCrummen was kno cking on Pingree 's back door, and a lap later he was out front. Once around Pingr e e , the Kawasaki mounted McCrummen put a second per lap on the fie ld en ro ute to a convinci ng vict o ry. Pingree wou ld go the distance for second place, a handful of seconds ahead of Griffin. Holland Rusty Holland (74) turned th is holeshot into a runaway victory in the 250cc Pro class. Going up a hill on the last lap , Black well got stuck momentar ily. T hinking his lead w as los t, he loo ked back and saw Scott Summers in a big rut . '" knew from that point on that I just had to stay out of trouble," Blackw ell said. "I tri ed to stay moving w itho ut getting stuck, and that was just the name of t he game : keep mo ving w itho ut getting stuck." Off the start , Team Green Kawasaki's P.A Allen got the holeshot, leading John Maschino and nine other AA riders onto the 9-mile course . Allen led most of the first lap . About a mile from the score tent, Blackwell passed him when Allen cou ldn't make it up a hill. Allen wen t back down and restarted his ascent, and Summers and followed, a close third. Blackwell led the next lap. Summers moved into seco nd. Allen remained a distant third. O n t he th ir d lap , Blackw e ll and Summers sw ap pe d bac k and fo rth Eric McCrummen (104) and David Pingree (71) went a t it over the lea d in the 125cc Pro class. McCrummen prevailed. charged the entire 20 min utes and was rewarded wit h a fourth -place fin ish, over Dennis Stapleton and TylerDuncan. Ho lland exited the first turn with the lead as t he s ingle 20-mi nu te 250cc Pro mo to go t under way. Josh Cox sett led into second, ahead of D unc an, Phil Lawrence and Stapleton . McCrummen's hopes of picking up a second class win were dashed when Davis went down on the high-speed back straight on the open ing lap and collected McCrummen in the process. Up front , Holland and his CRF450R were ste ad ily pulling away, as Lawrence stuffed his w ay past Co x fo r second . Holland had a comfortable IO-second cushion over Lawre nce by the midway point, and he wou ld add a few seconds to that by the time the checkers waved. Cox ran in third for most of the race before a fall dropped him to an eventual eighth. Ordelman overcame a midpack start to earn third -place payback, w it h Stapleton and Duncan finis hing in fo u rt h and fifth , respectiv ely. The big tur nout necessitated the running of two divisions of 125cc Intermediates , with the top 10 from both divisions going head to head several times, pulling away from the rest of the Mclass. "Guys were stopped everywhere, and sometimes you couldn't see where you were going because there was so much steam coming off your bike. You couldn't even see the trail, but you had to hit the hills wit h so much momentu m, or yo u wou ldn't make it up the hill. It was absolutely about an hou r and a half of complete chao s. but that's what makes it so much fun. Doug was riding really well , and it w as grea t, because it had been years since he and I had a battle like that ." Allen completed the podium. Maschino and Gibson finished out the top five. Sarge's Cycles / Pro Actio n of Kentucky 's Mike Sampson was the 2S0ccJOpen A winner and the overall A rider, and the on ly A rider to make four laps, finishing sevent h overall. Scott Martin sco red the Senior A win and came in 10th overall. Nathan Alering ma nhandled his RM250 to 14th overall and was the overall B winner. AO t h Anniv"rc;r1rll in moto tw o. It was t he CRF250R-mo unted trio of C hris Nihan, Brett Klein and Ricky James tha t ran out front early in that second moto, with RM125 pilot Daniel Sani making his presence known by lap two. Nihan and San! broke away in a battle over the top spot that woul d go down to the w ire , with N ihan prevailing. James finished third overall, topp ing Andy Bakken and Jared Morrison.
