(Below) Nick Wey (27) was credited with th e ho le s hot, but he lost h is drive through the ensu ing whoops. Ernesto Fonseca (24) foll ow e d Kevin Wi ndhom (b ehin d Fonseca) eorly before David Vuillemin (12) and Reed (22 ) got around to give chase. well, but every time he'd pull out a small lead, he'd mess up and not make it over an uphill triple that followed the seco nd whoop section, and Reed would jet right back up on him again. "I was frustrated coming out of the whoops - I was having such a hard time doing that triple, and I cased it one lap and probably doub led it about 15 laps of the entire main," Windham said. "These two guys were eating me up the re." Reed immediately applied pressure to Windham, and after a few tries he finally made the pass stick at the halfway point, unwitt ingly using waving yellow flags as a sort of pick going into the sand. Windham may have been able to shove it back under Reed in the section, as the Honda rider controlled the inside line, but if he would have don e so unde r yellow flags, he would've bee n penalized. He was forced to back out of it . From there, Reed raced to a comfortable seven-second lead, while Windham rode to the finish by himself in seco nd. "I gave it all I had, and it just wasn't eno ugh today," Windham said. "I definite ly don't have anything to hang my head about , and I'm looking forward to San Diego and the rest of the rounds." Reed was opt imistic about the rest of the season. "I think the season' s start ing to fall into how it normally goes, so I'm looking forward to putt ing in good we eks like I had this wee k and just staying on top of my game," Reed said. "I know that my shoulder is great - the phantom shoulder definitely stood up this weekend, and I was happy with that . Just, that's it. Just stay on to p of my game and try to get as many wins as possible." eN ANGEL STADIUM ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA RESULTS: JANUARY 17 , (ROUND 3 OF 2004 16) MAIN (20 laps): I. Chad Reed (Yam) ; 2.
