;/ > AMAlFMF/Honda of Houston Winter Rac ing Series Round I: Freestone County Raceway Hackley Highlights Winter Series Opener STORY BY KAT SPANN WORTHAM, TJ(, DEC. 6-7 ea m Green's Sean Hackley Jr. has proved to be qutte an adversary amo ng the Schoolboy and Inte rmediate ranks since retiring his 80 s and jum ping on a 125 . Hackley blazed to both the 12Scc Yout h ( 12- 15) and 125cc B wins via four perfect moto per form ances at the ope ning round o f the fourt h annual AMA Winte r Racing Series, hosted by Free· stone Co unty Raceway. This year 's series will see the little bikes and Beginne rs race on Saturday and the big bikes a nd Vet classes on Sunday. With a shorter program on Saturday, and wea ther permitting, an afternoon prac tice will be offered at each rou nd. The first 12Scc Youth ( 12-15) mo to came early in Sunday's sche dule. Both Hackley and Ronny Jackson were still full of morning Vigor. Jackson grabbed the holeshot, with Hackley in his wake and Arkansan Ozzy Barbaree in the m ix as wel l. Jac kso n led th e first two laps before a miscue in the whoop sect ion near the end of lap two gave him a jo lt. Though jackson managed to keep it on two whee ls, Hackley quickly passed for the lead. By t he end of the next lap, Hackley had extended his lead over the pack. Jackson pulled off at the top of lap four, handing his po sition to Barbaree , who was be ing pursued by Brandon Miller of Tennessee. Miller reeled in Barbaree thro ugh the whoops and made his pass for second just shy of the finish-line S turns. By then , Hackley had checked out. Hackley returned in moto two and once again led the race to the finish line, followed by Miller and Barbar ee. jackson finished fourth . and Adam Kitchner was fifth. Vince Mo nteleo ne nabbed the hole shot in the first 12Scc C ollege bo y (16- 24) moto , T chased by Tennessee's Blair Miller. Near the top of lap two, Monte leone hit a hay bale en route to jump number th ree and took a hard tumble, which ended his day of racing. Miller took the lead, followed by Kasey Worthington and Turne r Cavender. Cavende r grabbed the m ote -two holeshot , wit h Mille r second . Cavender went dow n on lap two, and Miller inhe rite d the lea d . Cavender remounted in second, followed by Worth ington and Tripp Ashley. Miller went on to take the win, with Cavender in second and Worth ington th ird, but Charles Martin passed Ashley on the final lap to finish fourth, forcing Ashley back to fifth. Nine riders loaded the gate fo r the SO cc Ope n class. Arkansan Jack Sheppard jumped into the lead and never looke d back. Sterling King finishe d second , with Brett Morgan a close third. KTM riders Nicholas Boshee rs and Blake Thunnan rounded out the top five. Sheppard jumped ou t front in the second moto, with Boshee rs on his back fender. King was third but passed Bosheers on lap two. Sheppard slid out on the corner before the finish line ; King capitalized and moved into first, where he finished. Sheppard followed in second. Dur ing the fifth roun d, in Gree nville, Kentucky, he started out slowly, but on the last lap he revved up his KTM 250 and maneuvered himself to a victo ry that made the Cottonm ou t h Hare Scram bles loo k easy. Racing with 10 other Mid-South M ride rs, Gibson encou ntered several obstacles in what tur ned o ut t o b e t he first r o und o f t he Pirel li/Parts Unlimited /Mo o se/Maxxis·spo n· sored series to experience ill wea ther. Off the st a rt, t w o rider s w ent do w n. Gibso n wa s midpack; John Robb ins slid out in front of him, blocking him, and P.A. Allen was mo ving up fro m behind.
