LEGHORN FLORESVIUE, TX, NOV. 27-30 he thi rd annual USA Team Motocross C hampionships wer e larger than ever, T drawing a record 1100 entries - including 200 women racers - fro m all over the nation fo r the four-day event. The Cycle Ranch facility eve n hosted a huge Thanksgiving dinner afte r prac· tice Thu rsday afternoon. The race featu red a $24 ,800 Pro purse fo r the men and a reco rd $20,000 Pro purse for the women, with 6-foot tr ophies awa rded through 10t h place . Th e AMNAlte x Wome n's Motocross League Cu p was held in con junction with the USA Team races. O rganize r Miki Keller pulled off o ne of the largest Wo men's races in history, drawing fema le racers from all over the world. Trac k own e r Ste ve Burns bu ilt a huge ne w covered pavilion and bleachers. Th is ye ar' s even t was sponsored by VP Racing Fuels, Racer X, Tuc ke r Ro c ky, t he WM L, Ho les h o t Magazine. Suzuk i-mou nted Tre vor Monks of Team Colorad o won the mota, over Team Mi nnesota t op gun Bru ce D ehn. Ronny Jackson of Team Texas finished third , followed by Monks' teammate Adam Harvey and Team Texas' Robert f ost e r. Team O klahoma 's Nathan Cox had a super busy weeke nd. winning the 85 cc Senior Team C ham pio nsh ip ove rall w ith tea mmate Co ry Sel f. C o x a lso wo n t he 8Scc ( 12-1 S) a nd Supermini classes a nd placed fo urt h in t he Schoo lboy division. Team O klaho ma racked up another victo ry in the 85c c Junior Team C hampionshi p, t hanks to Tyler 8 urns, Cody Smith and Dale Parrott . >OJ o However, the overall moto victo ry w e nt to youn g gun Derek Howerton of Team Texas. KTM-mounted Jacob Turbyfill and He ct o r Varela scored a tea m win for Texas in the 65cc Junior class, with Team Arizona's Ryan Eppers an d Am ber O w ing s ta ki ng second . Te a m Minneso ta, co nsisting of Clay Chapiewski and Robert Adcock, finished a res pectable third . The 250cc Team race was su pe rcomp et itive, with at least six racers capable of winning overal l. New Mexico's Aust in Mille r came o ut o n to p after a grea t co me-fro mbeh ind charge thro ugh the pac k. Colorado's Mon ks had a no t her inspir ing ride , finish ing second. Mille r 's teammates David Jenson and Jans in McCoy placed t hird and 10t h . New Mexico's 1-3-10 score earned them the overall and bragging rights for a full yea r! Team Texas finished second overa ll, w it h Foster, Brandon Jo hnson and Se an Cher ry go ing 4-S-8 on the day. Third place went to Tea m Alaska, con sisting of Honda pilot Art Fonseca, Justin Thomas and Clay Grant ham , who went 7- 1I- IS. Thirty girls came down to the gate , rea dy to race the Schoolgirl class. Local ride r Lindsay Myer s had her wo rk cu t ou t for her whe n Germany's Larissa Papen meie r, Ailsa Nix and Philo Petricig showed up to do battle . Even with Myers' knowledge of the track, she cou ld o nly muster a S-6 ta lly. Petricig won the overall on a I- I score, and Papenmeier took second, going 3-2. New Mexico 's Vanessa Floren tino also impre sse d the locals by taking third w ith a 2-3 sco re. They stillwa nted to win, but t his t ime t hey cho se w hich promo te r th ey wa nted to re pr ese nt . Ride rs coul d choo se eithe r Mutant Mot o rsports (Nort hern California) or CMA (Cent ral California). Most riders got into the spirit of things, and it seemed as if there we re two teams competing against each o t her. Th is meant the level o f competit ion see med to be raised a few rungs this weeke nd , wit h th e depth of talent incre asing in each class. In the end , eve ryone had a great time , and the racers had a chance to test their skills against a new group of riders. 72 So wh o had the faster riders? Well, in the I25cc and 250 cc Intermed iate classes , it was Centra l Califo rn ia, hands down. With Case y Hinson on th eir side . CMA swept those two classes . Hinson rod e flaw less ly and put his Suzuki across the checke red flag first six times to win three classes. In t he 125cc Int e r med iate class , Greg Karmann kept Hinson in sight. Karmann finished 2-2 for seco nd overall on his Yam aha. Third for the day was Suzuki jock ey Jacob Sanchez, wiho also rod e very w e ll, go ing 3-3. Both of those ride rs were repres enti ng Nor Cal's Mutant Motorsports. In the 250cc Intermediate class, the Hinson freight train rumb led on , as he won two more mo tos . Hinson rode one more time and chalked up another class win in the Schoolboy division. The runner-up was Cory Pennington, and his fellow Suzuki jockey Sanchez finished third . In the Pro classes , the Nor Cal riders were doing the winning. In t he I25cc class, Suzuki ride r Cory McDaniel put in the fastest laps and won both mot os , over C handle r Trafton and Aaro n Be rgantz. Yamahas wer e the weapon of choice for t he latt e r two . Rusty Ho lland cle aned house in the 2S0cc Pro class, Winning both motos aboard his 450F to t ak e the o veral l. C handle r ( 3- 3) again finished second , w hile Honda -mou nted Adam Miller (2-4) rounded o ut the top thr ee .
