Having Fund in Hava§u The second annual Danny Hamel Memorial Fundraiser was held at the Crazy Ho rse Campgrounds in Lake Havasu, Arizona, last month . The funds raised went into the Danny Hamel Memorial Fund, which directly supports Team DH, a race-team program for young up-and-coming off-road racers . According to Dave Hamel, Danny's brot her, WORCS Racing founde r and Team DH owner, the event was a huge success, with more than 150 riders coming out to enjoy the freshly built motocross section , groomed by Phil Johnso n of Race Inc., and the ever- challenging Crazy Horse GP track that encompasse s a long sectio n of lakeside beach. KTM's Kurt Caselli, last year's top Ame rican fi nisher at the ISDE in Brazil and fo rmer Team DH member, took time o ut of his busy schedule to attend and teach a private riding school for the '04 Team DH me mbers. Among two days of racing, a family poker run, and a team race, all participants were automatically entered into a pro duct raffle that ende d up lasting over an hour because of the many prizes that were dona ted from Team DH sponsors , azcyclesports.com and rockymountainmc.com. In addition, custom-etched glass limited-e dition Mark Sutton- built trophies were donated by Shawn Woods of sandcarved .com. Team DH was established in 1999 by Dave Hamel and has grown into a full- fledged KTM's Kurt Caselli cond ucts a private oH·road clinic at the Da nny Hamel Memorial Fundraiser in Lake Havasu. ' I ~I'~ ~ Recently, Honda info rmed us of some new jetting changes t hat could bene fit most Ho nda CRF250R . . owners, whether the bike remains bo ne stock or not. Honda tuning guru and fo rmer factory mechanic Eric Crippa said that he and the testing crew have found new carburetion settings fo r the little CRF that ~ • ••• . " )I.. ', allow the engine to run even better. Stock , the t:! . , ". ~~ . ; CRF250R's 37mm Keihin carburetor utilizes a 040 ' Slow Jet, and the fuel screw is turned out 1.5 turns . Crippa informed us that switching to a 042 510w Jet .. \1 \ ' . would allow the motor to run much better both stock and with bolt-on modifications, and he said . going as far as 2.S turns out (in other words, one (, '~ f' , more turn than stock) on the fuel screw could help . "']j ' ' out furt he r in most cases. Performi ng Crippa's suggeste d changes was almost too easy. All we had to do was loosen the clamps on the boots attac hed to either end of the carb uretor and turn it, exposing its undercarriage. After removing the plug on the botto m of the float bowl, we used a flathead screwdriver to remove the stock 040 Slow Jet and replaced it with the 042 unit. Then we added a turn to the fuel screw before returning the carburetor to its stock position and tightening the boot clamps. No removing of the subframe or anything like that was required. We're happy to report that the new settings not only made our CRF250R run much cleaner, in doing so it also made the bike noticeably faster and easier to ride. The new carburetion settings also fixed an issue we had with some modifications made to our CRF. We typically ride at an elevation of about 1200 feet or so, and our bike has bee n recently fitted a Pro Circuit pipe and a TwinAir Power Flow Air Filter system , both of which allow the engine to breathe much easier and, in turn , run better - but not perfect . Every now and then, we experienced a pretty serious hesitat ion down low under a load. Crippa explained that since the bike is breathing easier now, it was running much too lean. These changes also fixed that pro blem. Crippa added that except in extreme elevations (such as Mammoth) or tem peratures, the bike can be made to work anywhere with just an adjustment to the fuel screw. ~ :.' ·~". I. . ~'.~ ~-\".: ~·. .. ,...... -- "' ~ 14. . c< .• . ,.~ , ': l \ ~ The recent release of Crush, TransWorld Motoc ross' fi rst attempt at pr oducing a motocross/freestyle video , hit our desks a few week s ago, and it's been gett ing plenty of playtime ever since. The 45-minute DVD features the likes of Nate Adams, "Punk Rock" Parsons, Kevin Windham, Mike Metzger, Mike laRocco and Grant Langston in mostly freeride situations . Racing action is limited to some footage of Langston at the Mammoth Motocross , but the video more than makes up for that with shots of racers Langston, Windham and laRocco (yes, Mike laRocco!) going off on their backyard tracks . As is the norm with most recent motoc ross productions, Crush features a lot of freestyle action. The TransWorld guys, however, do a good job of presenting it a bit diff erently. The producers used loads of helicopter shots, and it's easy to see that they didn't hold back on the budget whe n producing this one . They also go to some different locales that haven't made it into some ot he r movies of this sort. DVDs like this re ly heavilyon music, and the soundtrack of Crush is a good one, featuring the likes of Pennywise, NO FX, Strung O ut, T50 L, Vaux, 3DoD, Plug Ugliesand more. O ne of the best parts of the movie, however, is a portion where you can act ually hear the motorcycles - especially in some of the crash sequences (nothing like a little midair death-rev to get you going). I end up watching most of these movies with my I I-year-old son, and sometimes the eject button gets hit early when the theme goes away from mot orcycling and into guys drinking and dancing in fires with partially naked women. This one is kid -safe. even though t he TransWorld poster girls do make an appearance in the bonus section of the DVD. For more info go to www.transworldmotocross.com/mx.
