Jordan Daniels swe pt the 65cc (10- 1 I) class wit h no problems at all. Daniels was in great form . and he actually made it through all of the 65cc (7-9) class and up to the back of his 65cc (10- 1I) class! James Jordan took second , fo llow ed by Tanner Saunders; both were a good way beh ind Daniels. In 125cc C actio n, Kev in 5mit h had no pro blem sealing up the top spot, but a great battle raged on behind him for second. Je re my Stroupe and Jonathan Bryant wer e fighting for every inch of dirt. Bryant held off Stroupe in the first moto , but Stroupe wasn't about to make that mistake again; in mo ta two , Bryant got out front at the start, but Str oupe waited for his chance and charged alongside Bryant across the jump and completed the pass at the com e r and held on for the second spot in the mota for second overall. E d Bec kley's C hec ke red Flag Productions made its annual pilgrimage to the J.S. Bridwe ll Arena at the MPEC Center in downtown Wichita Falls, Texas, drawing a fine field of riders . Consid erin g the blustery winter evening. the re was a good turnout of fans, too . Several thousand braved the cold and drizzle to cheer on nearly 70 entrants in a doze n classes. Cade Moo re . of the large "O range Crush" co nt inge nt o n hand , ra n away with the S5cc (4-6) division, leading eve ry lap over fellow KTM riders Jac k Sheppard , Hu nte r Gle nn , Trysten Edgington and Cody Johnson. On this rough-and -tu mble course, the start was the thing. and in 65cc action. Ryan Eppers jumped to the fro nt and was never heade d . Brandon Glenn batt led w it h Hunt e r Watson over the runner-up tr op hy, finally getting the spot . Tyler Steele finished fourt h, in fro nt of "Marathon Man" Shep pard. An even dozen ride rs ro lled to the line to decide the 8Scc-c1ass honors. First-heat winner Tedd y Parks too k home the gold. finishing the five- lap final ahead of Eppers, Tyler Orcutt, Glenn, and the winner of the other heat race , Dustin Jackson. In t he 12Scc Beginner class , Tod Mart in prom ised to imp rove upo n his heat -race finish (seco nd place), and he d id just that, wit h a convincing win over James Schrot el, who didn't finish his heat race at all. Kendal Rhea finished third . Fourth place went to heat- race winner Mark Whalcott , after he made a last-lap pass on Jacyn Altman. The 12Scc Novice race was all Beau Barton, who won both his heat and the main. Flat-tra ck ace and heat winner Je re my Hinkle put a lap. th ree pass o n Austin Allen for second place, 14 wh ile Sonny Co x slipped his YZ in fro nt o f Rance Northe rn's KTM on the final circuit for fourth. The 125cc Pro r iders w en t orr the line mixed w it h the 125cc Intermed iates. At the end, Jacob Martin beat out John Kemp, Charies Cast loo and Earl Ke phart. Yamaha-mounted Intermediate rider Zach Dyer avenged his heat race defeat wit h the class win in the final. Matt .e. Copeland , J Heaton and Kris Cu lver trailed . A sh o rt fie ld of 250cc Beg inners ran combined wit h a similar-sized 250 cc No vice class. There wasn't much passing, as Step he n Nowa k put his Honda in front and led to the checkered flag. No vice Nowak beat Landon Groves and Beginne rs C.J. Turkett and Trevor Reagan in the five-lap final. In the final race of the evening, the 2S0cc Pros r o d e w ith the 250cc Inte r med iates . Suzuki-mou nted Texan Charles Castloo stalked early leader Kemp and passed the KTM rider on lap four of the 10-lapper to take the bucks in the Pro division . yz rider Zach Dyer showed that his earlier win in the 125cc class was no fluke with a strong th ird place overall and the Inte rme di ate -class w in, ah ea d of Pro r id er Ke phart , o n a Yamaha. JANUARY 14, 2004 • CYCLE NE WS Southern All-Stars Tour Fina le Southern Belle Riverboat All-Stars Cruise to Stardom By CINDY GIBSON CHATTANOOGA, TN, NOV. 15 T he first Southern A11 -5tars Tour cele brated its series finale on Saturday, November IS. Seve n tracks from across the Sou t heast had played host to the 1 7~ r o u n d series, w hich included two Loretta Lynn's qualifiers. More than 200 guest s boa rded the Southern Belle Riverboat in C hattanooga, Tennessee , for a moonlight dinne r cruise along the Tennessee River. Vickie Robe rt s launched th e evening 's events with a war m we lcome . She dedicated the ceremony to the late Marty Martin, whose family was in attendance. As trac k promoter of Hillbilly Hills MX in Rob e rta , Georgia, Martin was a major suppo rt e r of AMA events in t he Sout heast and was responsible for bringing the first Loretta Lynn's qu alifiers to Georgia and Alabama . "O ur motocross family lost a true pioneer of the sport when Marty passed away," said AHA sports manager Steve Carneg ie. ..Racing was never abou t money with Marty; it was all about being togeth er: added Roberts , who host ed the evening's events. As guests dined o n a Southe rn-style feast , Roberts kicked o ff t he ceremon y with t he presentation of mor e than $12 ,000 in awards and prizes. In addition to personalized jackets and championship-sized t rophies, eac h series fina list w alked aw ay w ith a gene ro us prize package that included equipment, parts and gift certificates . All riders received a large shopp ing bag full of new gear, apparel, accessories and supp lies. Each package was topped off with a perso nal touch of duet tape, which Team SYD's Greg Roberts insists is a nec e ssity in every mech anic's tool box! While TMT track owner Andy Baggenstoc k lauded the top five winners of each class, Kelly Foutch and crew w o rke d fe ve rishly to distri bute the abundant supply of doo r prizes . Each ride r was given the opportu nity to thank his or her sponsors , as several w e re in attendance. Double honors went to Ryan Stanesu, who placed first in the 125cc Band 2SOcc B classes. Stanesu recei ved specia l re cogn it ion for participating in all 17 rounds of the series. Chuc k Palmer was awarded the first-place champ ionship in the Over 40 class. "The ground is harde r whe n you get to be my age!" noted Palmer. Jo sh May berry accepted his first-pla ce trop hy on c r ut c he s . De sp ite his inj ury, Mayberry managed to hold on to his first-place standing. Vickie and Greg Robe rts we re presented with a spec ial award for their commitment to the se ries ' success . As a tearfu l Vickie acce pted the award , she thanked the others who had devoted their t ime and efforts to the series. Greg and Vickie were given a we ll-dese rved standing ovation. As the awards ce re mony came to an e nd, the Southe rn Ramblers en terta ined t he crowd as kids from I to 9 1 danced and sang to oldie favorites. Black Jack Enduro Circu it Round 9: Hardwood Enduro Leivan Polishes OH Hardwood Win - and 7th Blackjack Title By PAM CARR CHADWICK, MO, NOV. 16 A s in years past, the 36th annual Hardwood /""\E nduro featured roc ky terrain and lots of ledges. Sporadic rain made the morning loop slippery, but by the afternoon it had dried out. The long co urse was appro ximately 80 tough ground miles. The first chec k was at 5. 1 miles, and it caught most riders orr guard . It was a tie brea ker that cost some peop le some t ime. Those riding at the top of their minute just barely had enough time to scrub off speed to avoid burning the check. The next four checks were reallyeasy, and most people zeroed them . The first re al po ints-taking section used a chec k-in, and the ride rs had to deal with some bottlenecks. This section was full of switchbacks, with hills that 40th Anniversary caused many riders to dismount and take up trail space. The fastest pe rson thro ugh t his sect io n was Caleb Wohlen. Steve Leivan was the second fastest , but that would be the only t ime he'd be second fastest. Virgin off-camb er tr ail made up the next points-taki ng sectio n. It was ve ry slick, and this meant the faste r guys had to conte nd with lots of t raffic. Leivan was very fast in this section, with a 3:43. The next closes t was Woh letz , with a 4:37 . This was t he end of the short co urse; the long course was a 35 ~m i le-lo n g , 24.mph mini hare scrambles. The first part of the trail was a long singletrac k section that hadn't been ridden in the mo rning. Lefvan was the fastest through the sec tion, turn ing in a 3:39, and the next-best score was a 5:37. Next was a lengthy reset to
