Upcoming Rounds : Round 2 - Arnhem , Holland , December 13 Round 3 - Anaheim , California, January 3 BRIEF L Y. •• Many of the privateers who attended the Seville race are looking at the prize-money pool for this year' s series, considering it a key opportunity to seriously supplement their income. occasion, three or four bikes wo uld be submerged in the t rack. while crewmembers work ed to dislodg e the machines. History Les son: Sev ille was once the most impo rtant link betwee n American and European trading. When Christopher Columbus discovered America (according to popular history books). Seville' s magnificent river port held the monopoly on relations betwee n the New World and the Old. .W ho wou ld ever have thought that America would be exporting supercross so many years later? Gra nt La ng ston was a little disappointed when he arrived at the stadium and saw that it didn't have a closed roof ... Had I known it was not a closed stadium. I wouldn' t have co me. " Lang ston said. " I mean. we expected to have a lot of riding, and all we have done is sit around, waiting. I'm lucky most of my testing and stuff is done. but it would still be nice to be able to practice." F1M Motocross president Wolfgang S rb was in Seville. The FIM frontman was impressed with the commitment of Clear Channel and Doma. "W ho would have ever thought this event could have gone ahead?" Srb said. "Full marks to the track team. The FIM wants the World Supercross to work. and we still look at cities like Sydney and Tokyo as possible future rounds - that would be the best thing for supercross. and also for the sport." Australian KTM rider C heyne (prono unced Shayne) Boyd arrived in America a month or so ago for some testing and has now been given a factory ride for the opening round of the AMA Supercross Series. The teenager will ride A naheim I. and then probably return to Australia for the Aussie season. As Mike B ro w n sat huddled up in his pit enclosure in Seville, he knew where he wou ld rather have been, and whe n Cycl e N ews asked him abo ut it. he was quick to answer. "To be honest, I' m sorry I came." Brown said. ' W ith no practice, it' s really affected my preparation for the season. I wish I had stayed home in the warm weather." Several American journalists att ended th e Sevill e Supercro ss , includ ing past and pre sent Cycle Ne ws guys Donn M aed a, D avey Co ombs and Steve Bruhn. Coombs was doing ESPN voice wor k for the event. "They asked me if I would do it [test the track surfacel , as the riders are not that keen, " Co ombs said. " In the end. the track loo ked okay, so I didn't have to go out. I'm glad about that. " The t umout of 15 ,0 0 0 , while not too bad. could have been much better. The Spanish people are known to wait and see what the weather is like before they venture out. and on this occasion it was obviOUS from the start that not many would bother silting in the cold stadium. The La Cart uja 'stadium is capable of holding around 60 .000 spectators . and despite the fact that the ~tadium was only a quarter full, the Spanish spectators made a lot of noise whenever somebody crashed or won . The order of the day was carnage, as riders, bikes, track marshals and just about everyone else got caug ht in the thick, sticky mud. On cue I e n e vv s JAN UARY 7 , 2 0 04 13
