The long course a dded 25 miles o f tig ht ra vi n es a n d wi c k ed sand whoo ps fo r en te rt a in m ent. Ride rs we re tho roug hly tested, but most ha d p le nty le ft to g ive on S unday . Th e wind p ic k e d up on S atu rd ay a fte rn o o n as a h a r b in g e r of t h ings t o co me . Afte r the half -h o ur m in ienduro , ride rs to ok their trophi es and found some dinner. Sund a y's tim e k e eper had rid e rs bac k atthe motocross tra c k in belowfreezing tempe ra tures for a 9 :01 a.m . start. The rou te s heet suggested the C loop would repe at all of Satu rday 's c o u rse m ileage , wit h anot he r 22 .8 miles of fres h trail for the long co urse. Wh e n th e flag dr oppe d , it was 45 mph for 4 .5 m ile s to t he first ti e b reake r c hec k . Th e 10 -mi n ut e fre e time was barely adequate for getting the blo od flowing in frozen fingers. Sat urday 's t ran sfe r se c tio n became a n 18 -m ph tim e ke e per, stepping up to 21 mph at 15.3 m ile s and then to 38 m ph at 20 .2 m iles . The tra il was m ostly fun , tw isting sing le -tra ck , wi th a few hills , so me d e e p ruts , fre ezing winds, a nd en ou gh sa nd to fill Death Valle y. The ne xt loop had tw o time ke e p ing secti on s a nd two serio u s ra c e s . More t han a c o u p le of rid ers were ca ught in th e branch e s of a tree wh ile atte mpting to sh ort -cut a s weep ing rig h t - h a n d e r. S ome tw is ty ra vin es we re s o na rr ow, t hey ' d pull rid ers ' feet from the pegs. Add to this mi les o f h ig h -spee d , waist -deep sand wh oops , a n d m ost ride rs were left wit h wob b ly le g s a t th e 52 .3 - mi le kn own -c o ntro l a nd short -c ourse fin ish . After a 20 -m inu te gas stop , th e d e g re e of diffi culty eased up in the 2 3 -m ile Al B loo p.
