On th e very next lap , Stewa rt ag ain pa ssed Steffan in the same spo t , only to h ave th e sam e thin g happen . B y lap four, Steffan had learn ed her lesso n and took th e in si d e l ine in that c o rn e r. St eff an t o o k th e chec ke rs with two or thr ee seconds to spare afte r figh ting off severa l cha rg es fro m Stewart. B y jum ping th e st ep- up , Ste ffan w as able to m ak e up ro ughly 1 1/2 seco nds every lap , and after about 2 1/2 laps, Steffan was wi thi n strik ing dista nce of Stewart. However. Steffan's apparent weak spo t was a series of tig h t tu rn s that preceded the infam o us ste p -up , w h ich ga ve Stewart eno ug h br eathin g ro om to hold off Steffan all the way to the c heck ers.
