On lap tw o , St ewart went for a very aggressiv e pass o n Steffan in a tight corn er after a larg e ta bleto p , but her advanta ge on ly last ed un ti l a few turns la t er , w he n Steffan jumped p ast Stewart t o ret ak e the lead. On th e very next lap , Stewa rt ag ain pa ssed Steffan in the same spo t , only to h ave th e sam e thin g happen . B y lap four, Steffan had learn ed her lesso n and took th e in si d e l ine in that c o rn e r. St eff an t o o k th e chec ke rs with two or thr ee seconds to spare afte r figh ting off severa l cha rg es fro m Stewart. "I kept lo sing tim e by tha t back st ep- up ," Stewart said regarding th e fir st mota . " I' m j ust gon na have to rid e harder the seco nd moto." A nd tha t she did . Wh en the gate fe ll for moto two, it wa s St ewart wh o sna r ed th e ho leshot , over W atie r an d Steffan , w ho was m o m ent aril y stuck in the gate . Stewart pu lled a fo u r -seco nd lead on Steffan by l ap two . However, the "back step -up" that Stewart had mentioned was proving to be her weak ness for th e sec o nd tim e . B y jum ping th e st ep- up , Ste ffan w as able to m ak e up ro ughly 1 1/2 seco nds every lap , and after about 2 1/2 laps, Steffan was wi thi n strik ing dista nce of Stewart. However. Steffan's apparent weak spo t was a series of tig h t tu rn s that preceded the infam o us ste p -up , w h ich ga ve Stewart eno ug h br eathin g ro om to hold off Steffan all the way to the c heck ers. Stewart too k th e overa ll with a 2 - 1 t all y , ove r S te ffan's 1-2 f i n ishes a nd Wa tier ' s 3 -3 sco re. " I' m so hap py that I was finally abl e to w in agai n ," Stewa rt sa id.
