Aft er so me ea r ly clo u d co ve r burned off , temperatures soared int o th e 90 s, which is unusua l for th e San Jose area an y ti m e, let alo ne lat e Oc to ber. Ju st as in it s siste r Supe rcross series , IT racers were co m peting for 5 -foot -tall cha m pions hip trophies , as well as tickets to th e 2004 San Fran ci sco Supe rc ross . T ho ug h the nu m ber of ra cers an d spe ctators had gro wn wi th eac h of the fiv e ro und s, th e IT crow d ca me tog ethe r lik e a fa mily . Th at po int wou ld be illu strat ed in great detail at th e series awards cere mony lat er in th e aft ern oon. But fi rst there was som e racing that needed to be don e. Kid s are always a lot of fun to wat ch. Th ey wear thei r hearts on th eir sleeves and somet imes take co m pe titio n so serio us ly. Conver sely , whe n success co m es , th eir reacti on to tha t is j ust as, if not more, remarka ble . O ne o f the larges t classes was the 6Scc Novice division . So many riders en tered that th ey had t o be split into two divisions. Th e to p riders in th e fir st heat races woul d be reseeded into the fi rst -di v isio n ma in eve n t , whil e the slo wer k ids wou ld go to the second div ision . T he sys te m had been w orki n g we ll in th e Supercross series , gi vi ng m ost of the rac ers a chanc e to race aga ins t other riders with sim ilar sk ill levels. In th e opening heat s, M atthew Sanchez, Cody Silva, M ichael Pimi k and Wes ley D aor o set themselves apart from the rest. A fter ju st m issing the cut to get int o the fir st -di vi sion fina l, he went on a mi ssion. He rode wit h con fidence on the wa y t o w inni ng t he D ivision Tw o m ain , which would serve as a warm up for his 85 cc conq uest. Speak i ng of 85cc r i d e r s , th er e wa s a healtlhy group of them assem bled at t1h e final race as well. On c e agai n , two divisions were nec essary t o accommodate t he en tries. Th e name Pirn ik was in th e mix again , only th is time it wa s the older Steven at the gr ips . He won his heat ra ce, despite th e efforts of Jacob Ka rr. Br iar Bauman won th e other heat aft er battling with J arr od Murray . Kar r and Stev en proved to be th e top dogs in the peak aft erno on heat . Steven was ab le to ho ld off Karr and take the fin al first pla ce of th e series. Karr settled for second but took a who le lot of comfo rt in k nowing th at he had just sec ured the cham p io nsh ip .
