J ohn Dowd ende d up going down in th e wh oops and rem ounted po inted the wro ng direction - dead last . Th e whoops cl a im e d a c ouple o f more victi ms on th e next lap, as B r a d Hagseth and Canadian rider Chu ck Mesley got togethe r near the end of that sec tion of trac k . Hagseth went on to co m pete in the 250cc main while Mesley m ade a trip to the hospital to get checked o ut . Lang e and Hofmast er m ad e q uic k wor k of N ees e and began to pull away whil e D emuth started t o bear down on Neese . Soon after pa ssing Neese, Demuth pulled alongsid e his teammate. "We're out there to race , but we're not going to go out and bang on each oth er - it's too ea rly in the season, and we don 't ride like that," Hofmas t er sai d of h is battl e with team mate Demuth . Demuth u lti mately got around , but he wa s quick to point out, "It was too la t e." Lan ge had nearly nine seconds in hand wh en th e checke rs flew. Hofmaste r , Ne ese and D ow d followed th e battl e for fi rst in vain, as Lange and Demuth were set ting much to o fa st of a pace. Demuth seemed co nte nt to foll ow for several lap s and grew c lo se r t o Lange , eventually forcing Lange into a couple of m ist ak es in the d readed w hoops section. W h ile De muth had his hands full , Hofm aster was tr ying his best t o stay ahea d of tea mma tes Neese and Dowd . "I just pu t my head down , hit my lin es and was ab l e to hang on to third ," Hofmaster said. "I' m j ust trying to ma ke up some point s and be con sistent after last night's bad lu ck. " D em uth got alongsid e Lange t hrou g h the t ra ck 's rhythm section, and Demuth took the insi de li ne and m ad e th e p ass stick . Lange q u ickly fa de d , seemi n g ly content to let Demuth go . "I start ed getting nervous, making little m i st a k es and just struggling th ro ugh the whoops ," Lange said . "I took it easy once he got by me - 1 didn 't wan t to crash . , want to be on the box every weekend ."
