By C RAIG JOHNSON HIWARD, FL, OCT. 5 Two Ryans - Szabo and Benesh - ruled North Fl orida Motocross Park, site of round four of the Florida/Georg ia Fall Cha llenge . Szabo won both motos of the 85c c Advanced class, while Benesh won both motos of the 85 cc Novice class. Both m et in the Supe rmini class to put on a show, and Szabo edged o ut Benesh eac h ti me out. The 85cc Novice class ran with the 65cc No vice class. Benesh j umped o ut front and never looked back en rou te to taking the first m ot a wi n . J acob Harris, wh o j ust moved up fro m th e Beginne r cl ass, ran second th e entire ti me. Kyl e Jenki ns ran third, and the lead er of the 65cc Novice class, Hu nt er Ha rbin , wa s fo urth . T yl er Ca m pbe ll rounded out th e top five . Th e orde r stayed the sam e in the seco nd mota . Szabo led every lap of both m ot os of the 85cc Advanced class, with Steven Harris fol lowing him home in second in both motos. Benesh got the j ump on the pack and the lead in the f irst Supermini m ota . Szabo p ush ed Benesh the whole time, and it all came down to the la st lap. Szabo found an ope ning and snatched the win away. In the second mote, Szabo m ade sure he had the holeshot , and he went on to win, over Bene sh. In the b iggest class of the day , Park er Dubois led every lap of the firs t 125cc Beg in ner moto. Colton Sloan, Er ic Do bbs, Sean Tuder and Hailey Reichert started in the to p fiv e. Sloan and po ints leader Dobbs fought for th e runner -up spot the enti re tim e. Dubois stayed j ust ah ead of th eir batt le . Dobbs got second after the halfway nag to take seco nd, over Sloan. Tuder kept fourth until the last lap, when a m isha p dropped hi m well back in the pack. Hanris and Tra vis Reill y m ov ed up from to p -j 0 sta rts to ca p ture fo urt h and fifth , respectively . In th e second o uting, Kruckenberg too k the early lead on the XR70, with Roberts hot o n h i s wh eel s . Ma r k Z a lk e ran t hird on a Yamaha YSR. Zalke finally slid by to take the ov erall win . Roberts took the Modified victory. In the pits , Roberts pointed out the rnodifl catio n to his XR50 : "I 'v e got an 88cc engine kit with a carb and a cam. BBR supplied the exha ust, front suspension and shock. I have installed wider footpeq s with taller bars ." Topczewski again took the lead in the 10· lap Small Wheel fina l. Roberts challenged Kruckenberg for second and took that spot during the second lap. Beh ind the lead three - some, the show of the race was the contest between John Balko , on his XR70 , and Zalke, on the Blata Pocket Rocket. Zalke showed that this ti ny bike was competitive, as he finished fourth overall. Topczewski took the overall win . Charging off the line in the Big Wheel class was Matt Sinclair, on his extremely m odified YSR (wi th a Hon d a CR80 e ngine) . Da n Schmitt was ri gh t behind on the 4&6 Raci ng KX85. In the Stock class, Suzuki DRZ 12 5 ride r Jeff Topczewski was in a heat ed battle with Hon da XR 100 rider Bria n Bar ke r. With one lap to go , Mit ch Pime ntal too k out Sinclair in a fa st r ight -han de r. In th e con fusio n o f th e crash, Barker and Schmitt slipped by to take the Stock and Modified wins. respectively. It was a royal battle in the second Big Wh eel rac e , as Ba rk er a nd J eff went at it again . Bark er held on to take th e victory. "I just tr ied to get in fro nt right off the line," Bark er said afterward. "This is a stock XR 100 wi th a BBR ex haust sys te m . I am runn ing a Continental tire in th e front, with an Avon on the rear." Bob Ma rcu ssen bla sted off the lin e in the Big Wh eel final. Schmitt ran second. During the third lap, Jeff m oved to seco nd and took off aft er Marcussen. At th e check ers, Jeff took the win . "To pi ck up m y lap times, I stopped using the brakes in the first comer ," Jeff explained . "Thi s is just a stock Suzuki DZR 125 wit h a Pirelli tire in the front and an Avon on the rear . I have a BBR exhaust system and susp ension ." Schm itt was victorious in the Modified class. Th e feature event was the Bel oit Hond aspo nsored XR Shootou t. Bar ker too k the early lead . Marcu ssen chall en g ed Barker for the lead during th e first few laps, as Zalk e and Pospis ch al battled for third. Martinez Double Dow n in La s Vegas By DI CK G OODWI N L\S VEGAS, NY, OCT. 5 The hea vy hitters in the Min icycle classes showed up in Las Vegas on Sunday to do battle , as MRAN opened up its first Gran Prix race in a four- race seri es . The 80cc Expert and 60 cc Expert classes were the "glamour" classes among th e Minic ycl es, blasti ng off the lin e in sepa rate waves. T he pride of Searchlight, Nevada, J esse Canepa, roosted out to lead Ca lie nte, Neva da 's J usti n and Cody Wallis to start the 80 cc Expert race. J oseph Martinez from Henderson, Nev ada, led Las Vegas aces Matthew Canepo and Tyler Pennew ell, as well as Hen der son hotsho e Tall on T ayl or, as th e 60cc E xpe rt gate dropped . Canepa was ca r v ing u p the lon g Gra n Prix co urse, but Curt is Brad ley was mounting a c h a rge, battling h is way past Justin and up into second. In the smaller div ision , Martinez wa s on a tear , ripping up into th e 80 cc A mateur ranks and leading fello w 60 cc co m petito rs Taylor and Ca nepa by a wide margin. By the halfway mark , Canepa was long gone. in a race all by him self. Ukewise. Marti nez was demolishing the co m pe titi o n in the Junior division. With lat e-race breakdowns by Bradley and Cody. Can epa romped to an easy win in the eocc Expert class, ahead of Justin. Martinez troun ced th e 60cc Ex pe rt division. leadin g T ay lor, Gregory Tucker and Pennewell past the checkers. The fastest and most important race of the week en d was the Pro Team contest - "fastest" because, taking tums each lap , th e Pros really co u ld keep the heat on . The t ea m of Clint Br aun and Nick Pearson got the jump off the gate and took the early lead, but Ma tt Gosnell and David Pearso n would be the dominant duo on the day , tak ing ove r th e point on lap one and str etc hi ng their lead throug ho ut the gO-m inute m oto . Braun and Nick held on to a solid second . but behind th em , the racing was close. The team o f Ma rk and Barry Freh ner b a t tl e d clo sely w it h Chad and Steph en Ti cheno r for sev eral laps until the Fr ehners finally brok e fr e e . Th e Mike Madrid ·and Robert M arshall co m bo came on to catc h and pass th e T ic henors, but then m echa nical prob lems made t he m g ive t he sp o t back. Th e F r e h n e r s a lso h ad tr oub l e s , le avin g th e Tl ch enors in so le possession of th ird pla ce. Second pla ce was never in doubt, as Braun and N i c k n ai l ed th at pos ition down b y m idrace .
