By B RAD lErCH ER SIOUX FAUS, SD, OCT. 5 The Sioux Valley Cycle Club 's hare scrambles season has come to an end with the annual Three-Hour eve nt. With the season championships completed, the Three-Hour two -man fu n race drew a la rge number of racers and some big names . Multitime A -cl ass cha mpion K evin Van Engelenhove n team ed up wi th Scott Velgersdyk to take on the likes of South Dakota m otocross legend Bill Stork and team ma te Internat ion al Six Days participant Mart Gea ry . A m at eur Nation al Ch am p ion Cody G il more also sig ned up for th e t wo -m an A class but cho se to com p lete the entire race by himself. If t h e compe titio n w eren 't tough eno ugh , the wea therman tu rned up th e heat to 84 degrees, and th e course had some surprises of its own in sto re. Th e race began with the traditional dead engine, straddl e-th e-front-tire start , with the A class g etting f irst crack a t the co urse . MidAme rica Mo topl ex/MSR /Silkolene-backed Van Engelenhove n was the fir st to get off th e line, with Gilmore and the team of Mike Koch (, Brian Hasslen in tow . Th e second wave consisted of th e lronman cla ss, whi ch had 1B rid ers, including Palace Motosports ' Lee Waldow , Wad e M u ld er , M i ch a e l Rowe an d J es se Blom berg, Th e Vet cl ass was th e third to leave the line , and Ji m Hohn and M i k e Pierson foug ht over th e ho leshot, which went to Hoh n . Th e team of Hohn f, Mike Let cher wou ld go on to take the clas s win , over Pierson £, Ti m Grosz. The t e am of Pet er so n Motors/ Cap ital Mo to rs-s po nsored Sto rk an d MSR -b ac k ed Geary quickly established th at they were the on es to beat , as th ey too k over th e fro nt spot. follo wed by Van En gelenhoven f, Velgersdy k and Team Green/Thor/S py's Gilm ore. Gilmore would have m ore tha n his fai r share of rid ers fro m oth er cl asses holding him up in th e slo wer section s of the track . Gilmore would lose ti me to th e lead ers in one sect ion but gai n mu ch of it back on the other sections. A one-line path along a pond woul d be th e downfall of many riders, incl uding the team of Chris Coppman f, Mark Skarpohl, who lost several laps after watching their KTM sink out of sight. Th e co urse m arshals spent m uch of the day pulling bikes and riders out of this pond. "Th ey rode last night at th e Boun ty Hunter Series ," said Tony Alessi of his sons Mike and Jeff, " and M ik e won th e feature.- (Mike, an Interm ediate, topped all th e Pros in th e main cu e tinued for most of the race, as he staye d in second for 10 of the 15 laps th e leaders would event uall y put in . Van Eng elenh ov en f, Vel gersdy k put on a late-race charge for the front but came up a little short. Stork f, Geary took th e che ckers, followed by Van Engel enhov en f, Velgersdy k , with Gilmore rounding out th e podium. Th e Ironman rac e was trul y a on e -m an show , as J esse Blomberg found his way to th e fr on t bef or e th e firs t lap ended and nev er loo ked back, Mulder, Ja son Ur choda, J ason Lehrk amp and Waldow batt led for second for th e first part of the race . Th e 25 0cc points c hamp ion, T im Va n Eye, wo rk ed h i s w ay toward the front, dropping Waldow back to seve nth in th e early laps, but eve ntuall y Van Eye experienced trou bles and dropped to the back of the pack . Meanwhile , Blomberg was putting o n a rid er's clini c , not only working his way into battles with the A -class two -m an teams, but throw ing down tri cks over a t abl et op o n almost every lap . Urchoda started to slip down the leaderboard, whil e Rowe began to make a c h a r ge . Row e w ork ed his w ay i nto th i rd , be h ind Mulder , and th e tw o fin ished a la p ah ead of fourth -p laced Lehrk amp and fifth pla ced Waldow. Bl omberg won th e Jronman cl ass by finishing a lap ahead of Mulder and also too k th ird overa ll, as he pas sed Gilmor e to fin ish j ust behind the Van Engelenhoven f, Velgersd yk team , Blom berg also fini shed off the last lap with a no -footed heel -cli cker aft er more than th ree hours o f racin g . Th e b igg est cl ass was the 125cc/25 0c c tw o - ma n cl a ss . The fast - startin g Da rr in Geurde ju mped to the front of the pack , which consisted of 24 team s. Geurde and his tea m m ate Th or Jenshu s ended up fifth, as the team of Cody Mehl hafer f, Jo sh Eng lin took o ver the lead for th e win. J enshus managed to kill the m otor on his YZ250F while showin g off for the camera but restart ed qui ck ly enough that he d idn 't lose a po siti on . A s th e SVC C hare scr amb l es sea so n ended, every one left with a full bell y of free hot dogs and p lenty of bench -ra ci ng stori es for the wi nter. On this day , at the fourth southem round of the CMC Trans -Cal Nat iona ls, after only a few ho urs of rest , the Al essi boys were at it again , and when the Perris Raceway du st had settled, they went home with seven m or e tr o ph ies - six of them the big ones, as Mike aced th e 125cc Interm edi ate , 25 0 cc Inter me di ate and Schoolbo y cla sses, wh ile h is you n ge r brother J eff did likewise in the 80c c Open , 80cc ( 14- 16) and Supermini clas ses. J eff also to o k hom e t he runn er -u p bra ss wh e n h e placed second to Mike in the Schoolboy duel , the only race in which they meet nowadays. It' s tough to steal the spotlight from performances like tha t, but Kyle Ma ce , who just spent his fi rst year racing the 1250c National Championships, went about his day doi ng his shar e of winn ing , He topped th e 250cc Pros and backed that up with a secon d-place fin ish in th e 125s, behind Cale Wallace. In the 250cc contest, Tim Beatty won the firs t m oto on his TMS/Motul/Acerbis Yamaha, with Ma c e closing in at th e end. Howev er . Beatty did n't start the second stanza , so Mace leap ed at th e cha nce and soo n had his Corona Mot orsports/S cott/ Pro Circuit Kawasak i hum m ing away with the lead , Chris Barrett p laced th ird in mota one, and he moved hi s Q ui ksil ver/Outlaw Racing / Maxx is Honda into secon d pla ce in mota two. Mace was dealt a pla te of bittern ess in the 125s when Wallace, riding the Weekend War · rior /MSR/Shoei KTM , got th e holeshot in both m oto s an d never loo k ed back . Th at eve nt, wh ich ran co nc u rrently with th e 125cc Int er m ed iates, wa s ups taged by the second wa ve' s tenaci ou s batt les beh ind leader Mike A lessi. In the fi rst outi ng , Ma tthew Wi lliams took seco nd ea rly on but was be ing badgered by A.J . Steinb ach , wh o passed him on lap three. Willi am s then slo wly sli p pe d ba ck to fifth , bein g passed by Paul Pearcy of Phoeni x and Michael Parker o f Las Vega s. An other rider in th e thick of it early on was Andy D'Arrigo of Founta in Valley , Califomia, who ran fourth for much of the first rac e before spill ing hi s Yam aha on lap fiv e and dropping to seventh. The second m ota was like th e first up front in th e Pros , with Al essi acing th e Intermedi ates. This time, D 'Arri go moved his Th or /Del Amo Motorsports/EVS Yamaha into second, with Will iams again chall enging early in third . Park er soon moved to fourth, wi th Upland's ' Ch ad And erson, on a J -J on es/Applied/Axo Yamaha, in fifth . D'Arrigo remained in second all the way to the final lap , when Parker made a despera te attempt at the runner -up spot; it paid off , and the pa ss moved him into seco nd overall, as St ei nbac h had spe n t almost the entire race attempting to ov er com e a bad start; the Shift Yam ah a rid er wa s nearly last after his first-mota runn er-up fin ish , and he was on ly sixth with one lap to go . However, he did manage to pic k off two spots on the final lap , and tha t gave him third. On e of the riders he passed was Pearcy, who to that poi nt had been th ird overall on h is Northland Motorsports /Crankworks/Os ir is Kaw asak i. Parker also was third, behind the Ales sis, in the Schoolboy class. Cory Redenius is rapidly becoming a force in the 1250c and 250 cc Junior ranks. On this day, he swept both cl asses aboard his Will iams Brothers Racing /HJC/N o Fear Yamaha . Jake Ca nada won th e opening sta nza of t he 80cc (12 -13 ) eve nt o n hi s . Team Green /R enth al / Spy -bac k ed Kawasaki wh en his chief foe, Co le Seely , spilled wh ile leading on la p two. However, Seeley , riding the America n Suzuki pow erfu ll y , ca me back and won th e seco nd outi ng to snatch away the overall.
