Due to some rain , riders were ask ed at the line wheth er they wanted a one - o r two-mote format , and the answered varied de pe nding o n the class. T he man on to p at th e end of the day was T erry Hamness J r., who abso lutely an nih ila ted the 250cc Pro and Up Th e Hill Expert cl asses. In the 250cc Pro class, it was all Ham ness, as he absconded with the holeshot and left the pack to follo w in his roo st . Battl in g fo r secon d was Four-Stro ke Nationa l co mpetitor Mik e Corde r, on his Hon da CRF45 0R , and Robert Holtgrew. Co rder event ua lly pu ll ed off, leaving Holtgr ew all alone in the second-place spo t. Weis s took the lead from Keane and Donn ie Hug hes at the start , but on this trac k , Keane's 750 cc Yamaha had more pow er th an Weiss' 350cc Hon da . A s they co m pleted th e o pening lap , Kean e m otor ed by . Whil e K ean e stayed in front to the end , Weiss never let him get m ore than th ree bi kelengths ahead . Weiss ca me ba ck later on th e same Hon da to co m pete in the 600cc Sportsman fi nal , and he came off th e second turn in seco nd, behind St ev e Br omley , with Nick Ta ylo r and Dale Miller followin g .
