This event was th e fir st of its ki nd ever held at th e NASCA R-style facility , utilizin g 90 pe r cent of the p av ed , ba nked q uarter-mile oval an d a large amount o f the dirt infield, creating a n ear ly 50 / 50 dirt -t o -p a v em ent r atio , with high-speed pa vement, two jum ps, and several dirt corne rs. Riders wou ld leav e the sta rt ing li n e and hea d int o tum one, a wid e, fas t , left h an d swee pe r o n t he ba nked asphalt, and th en ac c elerat e h ard onto th e back straight an d pitch it Side ways int o a hard left that took them off the p avem ent an d on to the dirt. Once in th e dirt, they hit a small j ump an d then a fai rl y lon g straight leading to a large righ t -h an der, and th en make a qu ick left before tumin g left again to get up an d over t he big j um p . The trac k was v ery demanding , and seve ral ri de rs we nt down in the d irt throu ghou t the day . So m e 106 entries made up 10 classes o f Supermoto racin g , and with temper atures in th e high 80s and free spectato r admission . it was qu ite an enj oyable afternoon - except for t h e d u st. Fr ank Nye from En gines O nly, a business devoted to high-performance work for XR 1ODs an d the li k e, sponsored the Mini Motard cla ss, and a first-ever $500 cash pu rse was offered to th e top fi ve fi nishers . A g reat battle developed early on am ong p erennial front -runner Garr et W illis o n hi s XR 150, Paul Orlandi on a CHM ·prep ar ed CRFI50, an d B r ian Parr iott on his sel f -built X R 13 8. W illis m ana ged to hold o ff th e tw o former roa d racers , who traded po sitions seve ra l times be fo re the checkered flag , w ith Parriott making th e most o f lapped tr affi c to eam second place. Parr iott and Orlandi battled again in th e Middleweight class, bo th aboard Honda 450s: Orlandi on his Roseville Cy cl e-back ed super mota ma chine, and Parr io tt on Brok McAllis· ter ' s DTX b ik e, set up wi th 19 -in c h wheels . Th e bigger whe els seemed to ha ve a definite ad v ant age in the di rt , as Parriott on c e again bea t Orlandi to th e lin e, with big A llen Ya rro w a close third on his Yamaha YZ450. The Prestige main event was to be a 15lap contest , and many of Northem Califomia 's su permoto regu la rs were on hand to go fo r cha m p ionship p oints an d t h ei r share o f the cash pu r se. Er ic managed to keep Gess tn at b ay for the win and t h e overa ll , whil e Gassin (3 -2) earned a we ll deserved second ove rall . Ma tt (2 -3) rounded out the top th ree. " Unlike a lot of these gu ys out he re today , I actually like this trac k , bec au se it is so differ ent tha n any o f the tra cks in Nor Cal ," sai d Eri c . "They ch an ged the start, and that was an improvement, but it gets dry and slick so fast that yo u have to t o t all y c h a n ge y o ur style fro m m ot a to mota. Kawasaki jockey David Gass in, aboard a new four-st ro ke , m ad e a surprise p ass on Matt for the second spo t, but soon aft er th at, Gassin hit the deck , and Matt c apit alized on th e m isha p , setting his sig h ts on McDa niel.
