T he trail turned out to be perfe ct. Given th at it is so dry at Ma yfl ow er du ring this ti me of ye ar, th e tr ail just soaked up the rain. The Highway 89 Ra c eway cr ew had prepa red th e t ra i l fo r almost any conditio ns for the inaugural High way 8 9 Rac e. A s th e rid er s st ar te d to get ready for the practice lap, the drizzle sto pped , and th e cl oud s j ust hung around for th e rest of the day. It looked as if ther e would be a goo d battle between t wo rid er s for the Me mphis Motorcycle Championship ov era ll , since this wa s the last race for that series. Brian Sanders and Dale Du k e wer e sepa rated by one point in the cha m p io nship battle, and it wo uld all co me down to th is one race. .., was pretty excited sitt ing on the line, but I j u st tr i ed to sta y c a l m and fo c u s, " sa i d Sande rs. As th e AA clas s blasted off into th e woods , it looked like Yam aha of Russell vill e ride r Clin t Carr would take th e holeshot. Sanders gave pursuit in second , fo llowed by Josh Poteete in t hird . By th e end of th e fir st lap , Carr had pu ll ed a 2Q-second lead over Sand ers and was cha rging hard. "I th ink that' s the first time I'v e ever go t th e ho leshot and not had any pr essure on m e," Carr reco unted . San d ers w as i n se co n d , fo ll ow ed by Kawasak i Sp o rt s Center rider Pote et e, who was four seco nds behin d . Th e two rid ers wh o were co m peting for th e M emphis titl e were se pa rat ed by m ere second s. Poteete wa s still in fou rth, hop ing to tak e o ver th ird. Tr av Tacker starte d dead last on the start , and now he had wo rke d hi s way up to fifth place. Th e pos iti ons of th e to p th ree sta yed the sam e for the enti re thi rd lap. Carr had a oneminute -and -1 O-second lead ove r Sanders. " I n eeded t o p ut so me m or e d istan c e between m yself and Brian. " Carr said , "so on the th ird and fourth lap s. I hamm ered down." Sanders m an aged to add six m ore seco nds between him self and c ham pionship co nt ender Duk e. "I knew Duk e was back th ere, so I j ust tried to not m ak e any mi sta k es and p ut a litt le bit of tim e betw een us," Sanders co m mented . Ta cker m oved into fou rth, and Poteete fell back to sixth . After th e fifth lap , Carr deci ded to sto p for gas; with a lead of o ne minut e an d 3 6 sec onds, it looked like it would n't p ut hi m too far down . Sand ers con ti nued to hold on to second and put a little m ore ti m e betw een himself and Duk e. Meanwhile , a rid er who hadn't really been in th e spo tl ight all day, Mike Snook, came out of the back of the pack to challenge Du k e for th ird. After Snook got aro und Du k e, he set his sig hts on Sanders. Tacker wa s sti ll rid ing well and hold ing on fo r fifth . O n th e las t lap , Sn ook cha sed Sander s down and was abl e to ma k e a pass on him on t h e motocros s sec t i o n o f th e t r ac k . Ca rr crossed the line to add another wi n to his tally for th e yea r . Beh ind the wi nn er , Snook wa s runni ng seco nd, wi th Sand ers right on his rear fende r. Snook went down with th ree com ers left in th e race, and Sanders went on to tak e second , a m inut e and 38 second s behi nd Carr . Snook got up j ust in ti me to beat Duke in for th ird.
