O n e of the b est turnouts of the se ries ma de t he g rand finale even more excitin g . With the strong Pro turnout, though, there was quite a bit of speculation as to whether or not any of them would m ake it. Hail ing f rom C aliforn i a 's hi gh desert , Chauss ee cam e out swing ing in th e op ening 125cc m ota, fending o ff Mi chael Young and Buck elew, who was riding a Pro Circuit Kaw asak i. Northern Ca lifornia 's Blair suffe red some bad luck in the first race, fi nishing a lowly nint h, but he got thi ngs togeth er in the final rac e a n d n arro w l y de fea t ed Ch au ssee. Cha ussee won the ove ra ll , followed by Buckelew and Young . Al essi won the 125cc Intermediate class going away . Weston A rthurs and Mitch Bragd on battl ed for second place, I 46 N OVEM B ER 12, 2003' cue trad ing runn er-up finishes; Arthurs won by way of a ti e break er, since he had the better finish in the final mota. Alessi repe ated his tiddl er- cl ass performance by ridin g a CRF450R to victories in both 250cc Intermediate qualify in g m otos . Once again , Arthurs was in the hunt for second, th is time trading fin ishes with Michael Bunyea. Arthurs got the short end of the tie breaker, though, by going 2 -3 in contrast to Bunyea's 3-2 tally. In 250cc Pro qual ifying , Holland ap peared to be b ac k on h is game , riding his Claw son Motorsports CRF t o a cl ea n swee p. Chaussee proved t hat his v icto ry in the 125cc class w as no fl uke by finishi ng in second bo th races . Jurev i c h took t he final podium spot with a cons is tent 3 -3 perfo rmance, while Young and Zeb Armstrong com pleted the top five. The pre -ra ce hype reached a fev er pitch go ing into the m a in eve n t. Alessi was th e only Intermediate to qua lify: but his performance was so dominating tha t there was no way he could be left out . He caught several Pros wh o ran off th e firs t gate in th e qualify ing rac es. Be cau se he ca m e ou t of th e Interm ed iate classes , he was position ed at ab out th e m iddle of th e si n g le -file st art fo r th e B ount y Hunter race . A s usu al , Holl and w as rewarded for sm ok in g through quali fyi ng by starting at th e ba ck . Cou ld he co me th roug h the pack and ' pa ss everyone, inclu ding Al essi, who ha d a big advantage in position? The fir st few laps were a free-for-all. Severa l r id er s g o t bun ch ed u p i n groups whi le trying to esta blish a running order. Al essi came up qu ic kly, as did Holland. Bu ckel ew wa s out front I e n e _ s early ; one m ight ex pect th at from a proven su pe rc ross w inn er , but " J . Buck" had j ust returned to rid ing after a long layoff du e t o injury . Th e fac t that he was ridi ng a 125 aga inst a field com prised mostl y of 250s m ade hi s feat even more im press ive. Al essi got a break wh en a co u ple of ride rs tangled in a corner right in front of him. The on ly place he could go to avoid becoming ano ther casualty was off the track. He did so, and then re-entered th e track right in front of th em. Riding his trusty 45 0, he reeled in Buck elew after a few lap s and m ade a cl ean pass for the lea d. All eye s the n shifted t o Holland, who was tearing th rough th e pack like a wild ani ma l, knowing fu ll w ell that h e needed to get u p fr ont before Alessi had gott en too m uch of a cushion . Holl and 's m arch was halted when he lost his front end in a comer and went down ; he ca me co m pletely off the bik e and had to restart it, wh ich allowed seve ral rid ers to p ass h im . With the race more th an halfway over, Alessi was able to relax and easily ride to another victory. Chaussee eventua lly passed Buckelew and finished sec ond, right ahead of him.
