The racin g a c t i o n t oo k place on the N ati o n a l tracie T hi s first -eve r " O ct obercross" featu red an unusu all y design ed track that was prep ped to p er f ect io n and generous awa rds packages for th e riders who di d well in their races, includ ing an etc hed m ug com memora ting th is in au g u ral eve nt th at is su re to grow in stature i n com ing ye a r s . REM 's Frank Tho mason thanked all of t he ev e nt' s spo nsor s at the r id er s' meeting, particu larly One Ind ustries, T A G M et a l s , VP F uels an d S mith . In the fir st 125 cc J unio r moto, Matthew T ed d e r t o ok the w in ab oard h i s Ho n d a CR 12 5, w h ile Shaun Hill ion put in a supe r rid e to secure th e runner -up slot. Wagema n (6 -4) wa s fo urth, an d Kudrave (5- 6 ) fi lled out the top five slots. In 2 5 0c c Ju n i o r ac t io n, A y er s again bested the field o n the day , this time with a conv incing 1-1 tally to earn th e o vera ll class win . Matthew Kelly was th e best of th e rest , as his 2-3 rides were good for second pla ce , while Mission Yamaha 's Justin F a lk took third place with his 4 -2 scores . T h e Pro race was an interesti ng affair, as it allowed any clas s of bike to be run , m ixing 125 cc , 250cc and fourstroke bikes into on e big race . In th e first m oto , Vet racer T e rry Fowl er j umped out fro nt and he ld th at posi ti on fo r nea r ly half the rac e before Yamaha 's Ryan Du dek was able to run him down. Late in the m o t o , St eve B o n i f a c e , r idi ng a new S uzuk i RMZ250, was al so able to pu sh Fowler b ac k o ne m o re po sit ion . Whe n th e checkered flag flew, it was Dudek firs t, with Boniface seco nd and Fow ler third . In m o t o tw o , B arn et t C l u tches / Kenda Tires rider Craig Davi s bl ast ed o ut into the le ad w ith th e h o lesh ot, wh ile Bon iface and Fo wl er gav e chase. Boniface took the lead on lap two and never looked back, eventua lly winning e nevvs the conte st going awa y . Du dek gated poorly but wo rke d his way up to sec ond place by the end of the 20 m inut es. Fowler wa s again th ird. For t h e d ay , Boni f a c e w a s th e ov erall w in ner afte r w inn ing the a ll im port ant second m ot o. Dudek ( 1-2) cla im ed second, and F o w l er ( 3 -3) w as th ird , and fi rst Vet. Th e 80 c c Begin ner class featured a large ga te o f riders, and wh en the du st settled, it wa s Suzu k i ride r Brian Cavan au gh who took the overall w in wi th a 1-1 swee p . A rv in Lunsford was the runner-u p with hi s steady 4 -3 rides, while J ustin Jones (3-4 ) t ook thi rd . Sean Fr ida y 's 5 -5 ri de s were go od fo r fourth overall, while Chasen Tedder 's 9- 2 scores placed him fifth. The Over 40 Intermed iate c la s s was hotly conteste d, and in the end it was Stephen Watson who took the top sp ot afte r winning bo th m ot os aboard h is Yama ha YZ250 . Watson and C.T. Falk had lengthy battl es in eac h race, but both times out Wat son refused to m ak e a mistake and was ab le to pr evail. Falk 's 2 -2 ri des earned him second place, ahea d of third-p lace d J im Hanson (4 -3) rides. Rudy Ch av ez (54) claimed fo urth, wh il e Don Sievert son (3- 6) fill ed out the top fiv e. O verall , this inau gura l event went off bea ut ifu lly.
