Th e 29 -y ea r-old T en nessee nati ve said th at he has rac ed a few end uros but th at his heart be longed to hare scrambles. He pu t a 48 -second lead on Reed, who wra pp ed up seco nd pl ace. Leon ard tha nk ed Moose and hi s KTM fo r his win o n th e day . Carter ca m e in on e minute and 32 seco nds beh ind Reed - not bad fo r a wet, tough race . Gas Gas pi lot Bob bit logg ed the fastest lap ti m e, fini shing his last lap in 35 m inutes and 5 1 seconds. That was only one seco nd faster than Reed's come back on the last lap . "I enjoy the m or e lengthy and chall enging trails ," Reed sa id , " gi v ing m e m ore time to co me back from my m istakes. I kn ew I had to get aro u nd Land on , so at t he c ree k I j us t jumped it with everything I had and flew rig ht in front of him ." With rid ers suc h as th e 2002 SERA Hare Scrambles Cha mpion, Suzuki jockey Land on Carter, and SERA's End uro champ, Suzuki rider Stephen Reed , the Yellow Leaf Creek race was o ne to reme m ber. It wa s a gorgeous morni ng as rid ers came together fo r the Kids Hare Scra mbles, but just minutes before the event was ready to start, rain clouds rolled in , and a tremendous dovm pou r began. Everyone scatt ered to their veh icles or under canopies, and the announcem ent was m ade that th e Kids event would be ca lled off. Howev er , thanks to the m orning sho w e r s, one sl ic k an d mudd y event was abou t to take place for th e adults. Four laps of a long 1 J.5-mile loop lay in stor e for Carter and Leonard, who wer e sta rting first on th e AA row . Th e two contended for the hol eshot , along with SERA 's Glenn Myatt a nd SETRA' s Russell Bobbit. Reed w as th e last off th e sta rti ng li ne an d in to th e wood s, but he m anag ed to pa ss everyone but Carte r for the lead po sition by th e second lap. With Cart er stil l holding on to th e lead , Reed and Leo na rd foll ow ed cl osely behi nd on th e second la p as they crosse d two creeks and made thei r way thro ugh th e rocky and sli ck terra in . Just before th e third lap , Cart er spun out onto a fire road and ga ve Reed the lead . Howev er , he d idn 't hol d o n to it lo ng; w ith Leonard as witn ess. CCS F lorida Region Moroso Motorsports Park Pihokken Dominates at Moroso By l iSA T HEOBALD WEST PALM BEACH, FL , SEPT . 2 1 Jim Pihokken not on ly dominated the heavyweight cl asses on hi s GSX -R750, he won the Unlimited Grand Prix eve nt , beating o ut th e bigger m ach ines . From th e sta rt , th e feature race was a two - ri d er battl e between teem m ates Pihokken and Scott Ritch ey . Th ou gh Ritch ey nailed th e holeshol and led th e pack through m ost of th e fi rst la p, Pihokken pull ed alo ngside hi m on th e fron t straight and took over the lea d at the entrance to the chicane. A t the hai fway flag , Ritchey pu lle d alon gside Pihokk en on th e front stra ight and passed him at the entr ance of th e turn - 12 chicane. but he cut the co me r and ran th rou gh the grass , let Pihokken back aro und him and fell ba ck to seco nd place. On the next lap , Ritchey pulled in to take a stop -a nd-go penalty for runnin g thr ou g h the gr ass an d d ro pped ba c k , lo sing ground to Pihokken th at he co uld not m ak e up . J ohn o Bowman wa s now on Ritchey 's tail in a battl e for second . but Ritchey' s ma chine outpow ered hi s on the straighta way s, k eeping Bowman behi nd .
