Th e fina l ro und roll ed to th e lin e, and again Bra nt led the way , ensuring himself a spot in th e semis by going wire to wire . DiFrancesco was hot as he, too. p ut another win on the board . Sha un Harmatiuk cu t himself a g reat gate and got him self a win . The final race went to Larse n. There was a runoff for the final spot in the sem is, be tween Harmatiuk and " Go rge o us" Gary Hicks, who had j ust gotten married the nig ht befo re. Th e nod went to Hicks. The first semi had La rsen on the pole. with DiFrancesco in t wo , " Dukie" Ermolenko in th ree, and Hic k s and Ma nchester on the out side . "Grandpa " Russell , as he is affectionately known by the riders , has been such a la rge part of speedway for so ma ny years and has sponsored so many of the g reat ones. Sanchez crossed the line several seconds behind YZF - R6 -mounted Cra ig Mo ntgomery, who checked out early on the field and led every la p of the even t. Goi ng into th e fin a l round of th e series, San ch ez led series ri val Logan Young by a scan t five points and needed to fi nish ahead of him to take the ch ampionship. At th e start, Brett Cha m pag ne got a fast start from th e second row of th e gr id on his Hon da 600 RR an d l ed th e 23 - ride r fie l d thro ug h turn one . Mon tg omery was qu ic k as well and was ri ght on Champagn e's rear tir e goi ng into turn two . Montgomery was able to get on the gas a little faster and took the lead at th e ex it of two. After getting to the grid late because of a last -mi nute bi k e change and starti ng from the back row , Sanch ez wa s last when th e field crossed th e stri pe for the fir st time. By la p fo ur , San chez h ad m ov ed up t o fourth , behind Young . Meanwhile, Montgomery had p ull ed an amazing 1O-second lead , with Cha mpagne run ning a soli tary second. Law lis encountered brak e p ro ble ms and pulled int o the pits , elevating Young up to th ird . On lap fiv e, Sanc hez displ aced Young and Cha mpagne to take control of second, some 12 seconds behind M o nt gom ery . However, when th e pack came arou nd for the sixth circuit. Sanchez was aga in at th e ba ck of the front- runn ing group . "They o n ly gave us o ne transponder fo r both bi k es. and it was on the wrong bik e when Michael went out [fo r the start ]," said Gab e Sanchez , M ic ha el ' s broth er an d m anag er.
