Belgian motocross legend Stefan Everts , comi ng off his best-ever
season, pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the season when he
beat one of the greatest Supermotard riders of all ti me. Stephane
Chambon , to win the opening moto of the Trace Superbiker event
held in Mettet, Belgium . on October 12.
The seven-time World Motocross Champion was in brilliant form ,
leading home Chambo n and Frederic Boll ey in a thrilling Starbiker
Challenge race. After a poor start, Everts closed the gap on the faststarti ng Chambon and then passed him in the closing stages of the
race.
"I don't know what happen: Everts said . "I have never been able
to do the same pace as Chambon, but today I just felt really good. In
the dirt section I had so much confide nce."
Later in the day, Everts finished an eventual seventh overall in
the Trace Superbiker, an event that pitted the seeded Starbiker riders up against the m ore traditional Supermotard heroes. In this race
it was World Supermoto regular Boris Chambon who won ahead of
last year's Superbiker champio n Federic Fiorentino and Eddy Seel.
Former 500 cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz had a terrible
weeken d, crashing hard in Saturday practice and then again on
Sunday. The Texan didn 't take any more chances in the two finals,
finishing in 20th and 27th, respectively ,
"The mind is still a racer: Schwantz laughed. "It's the body that
is the problem . I j ust can't make the same decisions as I used to. I'm
havi ng fun, though , signing some autog raphs, which makes it 'all
worth whil e. I hav e to hand it to Stefan (Everts] though; he rode
great in the Starbiker race , I might come ov er for some Wor ld
Superm oto races in 2004 - if the tracks are long and fast enough."
