Desperate to c at ch up , Ne sbitt hit a roc k . then a tree, then the groun d . and fell 30 seconds down by la p's end . With just a lap to go, and th e champion ship in sight, Leivan clung t o Wohletz , looking for an opportuni ty to pass . It took almost four miles of that final lap, but Lei van stra ightened o u t a t ight se c t ion of co rn e r s a n d n o sed hi s An sw er/Dun lo p /Sc ott /DP B rak es/UFO back ed ride in to a lead he wo uld not relin quish. That turned out to be exactly th e situa tion. a s Woh letz co u ld only get so close in the du st, but the 18 -year -old YZ2 50F jockey ke pt w ith in str iking d ist an c e t o clai m run ne r -u p ho no r s - h is bes t -ev er result. Th is victory ex te nde d his win stre ak to five in a row . "I kn ew that a wi n tod ay could wr ap up the tit le, so I was foc used on tr y ing to get that don e." Leiva n said . "T he last fo ur races have bui lt some m omentum for m e, bu t this wa s a to ugh race. We go t dow n to the end , and I wa s able to use m y expe rie nce and prepa rati on to pull m e th rough . It' ll be nice not having any pr essure to deal with th e last few races." T he Sarge's Cy cle/ KTM/ Pro A ct ion of Ken tucky/ Sm ith / Ma xxis T ires-back ed Gibson got off to a slow start but qu ickly recov ered when everyone else swung w ide goi ng into a creek sec t io n . He took the insi de li ne and m oved in to sec on d p lac e, behind Yameha- rno unted Jon Buckner. " I passed J o n o n th e mo tocross tr ac k ." Gibson recounted, " and he stu ck with me for a while until he m issed a turn o r go t a flat tire. I pull ed a good lea d until I sto p pe d for g as . That's whe n Ste ve Gord on ca ugh t m e." On the second lap, Gordon led while Gib son struggled with lappers. Fr om that point on, Gibs on and Gor don swa pped the lead unti l the last la p , whe n Gibso n brok e away . " I really di dn 't want to m ak e any mistakes, so I slo wed do wn and took m y ti me," said Gib so n, who fi nis he d fi rst o ve rall a nd in th e 250cc / O pe n A class a nd earne d an extra S100 . " I'm o n a new EX C 250. and I haven't go tte n m y shock do ne ye t; I ha ve m y 450c c shock on it. It ga ve m e a pr ett y good wo rkout an d was kick ing m e aro und a little bit.
