Shane Walt s and Brian Garrahan on the upcoming IS D E and the U.S. chances: "I am really looking forward to it.- Raines said. "It will be fun being teammates with the racers that you compete with all year. The terrain in Brazil we will be competing on is mostly sand. The Europeans are excellent sand riders. but we have some extremely talented sand riders as well. with Davis living in the desert and Lafferty used to the New Jersey sand. Freddie and Smith are tough in any condition, and Kiedrowski's MX skills should help as well. " "We have a real strong team.- Andrews said. " Hopefully we can all stay healthy. I am looking forward to showing the world how good we are." "I will definitely be going. on the Australian team." Walt s said. "The U.S. has some high·level riders going. and the support is there. The race is won on the track. though. The skill level on the track. the U.S. still is not on the same level as the Europeans.- "Pat and me are on a club team. - Garrahan said. " Should be fun. We have held trials events. XR100 races and a barbecue to raise money to go. We probably had over 300 at our house. Our sponsors donated items to raffle. I am looking forward to rt. " What is a Saluki? An Egyptian dog . The Southern Illinois area has been referred to as "Little Egypt - for many years. It started when a drought occurred in northern Illinois and everyone traveled south to pick up grains and vegetables and fruit. The migration of people moving down to an area between two rivers was related to a biblical story occunring in Egypt. The name became popular. and when co m m unit ies we re being formed , town names were based on that as well. Basketball fans might remember a couple years ago our Southern Illinoi s U niv er s ity S a luk is reaching the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. cu e I e n e vv s O C TO BER 1 , 2003 39
