Micky BRIEF L Y••• One o f the vic tim s o f the rain on Saturday wa s th e Don C an et d e s igned Supermoto track . The reason was that the local red c lay like soil that the dirt sections were composed of wa s absolutely treac herous when a little wa ter was thrown int o the re ci pe . The problem wa s that a w hole lot of water was th row n into the mix. D espit e the fac t that th e Honda J r. Supe rmoto Challenge kids wo rked extensively on the track (see below) , it was going to be impos sib le to keep up with it all day o n Sunday · and for what loo ked like mor e rain on M onday . So Canel and his crew eliminated most of the dirt sections for M onday' s event s. leavmq only one small dirt jump eXiting the infield . The change altered the nature of the track co mpletely. changing the first co rner from a c h ic a n e in to a hairpin . which made fo r some awesome hac kers during the races . The original track had a hairpin . left-ha nd berm lead inq onto a table top , down a dirt st raight and into a nqht -hand hairpin . followed by a kicke r jump and then one last left -hand berm before the rest of the infield. M ost of the riders felt that Cane t and his crew did an excellent job of turning the track int o an ente rta in ing and fairly rain-pr oo f ven ue . The rest of the trac k rema ined much the same as the o riginal. The AMA address ed ride rs ' co mplaints abou t the dismal purse and odd payo ut struc ture at the inaugural round of the series at Lag una 8 eca . The second round at South Bo sl on not only off ered a larger purse , up 1 0 $5000 from $3000 for both the Unlimit ed and Red Bull class es, but it also changed the payout s to a more traduional struc ture. In both classes the purse was as follow s for fir st throug h 10th: $1000, $750, $600, $550, $450,$400. $350,$300,$300,$300 . In an effo rt to tie the AM A Red Bull Supermoto event in wi th the A MA Chevy Trucks U .S . S u p e r b i k e doubl eh eader at nearby Vi rginia International Raceway (VIR), $3 discou nt adm ission coupo ns to So uth Bo ston Speedway we re offered to anyo ne who had atte nded the event s at VIR earner in the day . Unfortunately for the fans, South Bo ston also shared VI R' s incle ment we at her prob lem s with plenty o f rain delays al bot h track s over the course o f the wee kend. Round three of the AMA Red Bull Sup ermot o Championship, whic h was to be held at Turne r Field in At lanta on September 27 . h a s been cancelled because of permit iss ues wi th the city of A tlanta. according to an AMA official. ~ We were told we we re permitted, then we we re told w e didn't meet the gO-day requirement lfor sec uring a perrrutl ." AMA direc tor of communica tio ns Keny Graeber said. Red Bull and PGI, who were pro rno tinq the race , were also led to believe they had the proper permits , G raeber said . " The city was in favor of it; they wan ted to make it hap pen . ~ Graeb er said. but their hands are tied . "T he city has no va riation on the gO-day permi t . - The AMA wa s no tifie d last M onday o f th e permit problem . G raebe r said the race . w hich wa s confirmed only two weeks ago , will be replaced - he expects to name a replace ment venue soon and that the AMA Red Bull Supermot o C hampionship will remain a six race series. The Turner Field even t is expected to be on the calendar for the 2004 series, G raeber said . Round two of the AMA Red Bull Supermoto series was suppo sed to be a one -day aff air much like a supercross. A t ro und one of the champ]ons bip at Laguna Seca . the racin g eve nts spanned tw o days, and. as it tum ed out due to the rain po stp on em ent, the South Bost on round ended up beinq run ove r the course o f thr ee days - not exac tly the way a Supercross is run aft er all. Nicky Hayden wa s an int erest ed spectato r at South Bost on Speedway, showinq up on Sa turday night to watch Ihe racing With his father Earl. Hayd en never got to see any actio n but rod e shotgun in thei r rental car, run ning laps arou nd the asphalt sec tions of the spee dway in an eff o rt to help d ry it out prior to the rains hitting again. Rumor has it that Hayden would like to run in an upcom ing AMA Red Bull Superm ot o event w ith bro ther s Tom my and Ro ger Lee. Stay tuned because last season at an ex hibi tion rac e at Ediso n Fiel d in An ahei m . C aliforn ia . he bea t Larry Peg ram and Kevin 8chwantz in th e main event on Sun day aft ernoon , showinq style that wou ld make the Euros worry. In a valiant effo rt to save the program on Satu rday night , Danny Walk· er rounded up the Honda J r. Supermoto Challenge riders and put them to wo rk shovehng dry soil on top of th e soa king wet clay to make It ridable. " The kid s wan ted to know what they needed to do to be able to ride. Wa lker said . " So we got out here and are doing everything we can to make the track ridab le . - Before the rains returned . just prior to wh en the semis we re supposed to start, the track looked absolutely amazing. Too bad it was all fo r nothmq . B A s it turns out. the Honda J r . Supermoto Challenge ende d up bei ng a victim of circ ums tance due to the weather and w asn't able to run on Saturday or Sunday , and it couldn' t be fit into the abbreviated M onday schedu le. It's too bad beca use the kids tried the" best to get things up and running for everyone on Sat urday n;ght. At least four of the factory KTM nders incl udmq Bons Chambon, Ivan Lazzarini, Doug Chan dler , and Ben Carlson all had difficulty restarting their KTMs after either spills or stalls. C hambon DNFd in hts Unlimited Superm ot o heat race after not being able to restart the bike afte r c rashing w hile in the lead. In the second 8upermoto heat race Lazzarin i wa s leading J eremy McGrath co mfo rta bly wh en he had a spill on the whit e flag lap and couldn' t get It to fire. The same thing happened to Chandler In his Unhmited Supermot o heat race. sending him to the se rnrs. "The bike co ughed, I hit the jump and shut the gas off in the air, and it just coughed and was dead ." Ch andler said , " The heat isn't doi ng us any favors, but we 've been having problems . The things are really rich on the bottom, and so they just don 't carburet very goo d. - He rolled to st op and got lapped befor e the bik e would restart . Ca rlson had th e exact same thinq happen to him as C harnbon . in the same co rner, but he eventually got It starte d aft er getting lapped. Mike Metzger was suppo sed to line up for the Unlimite d Supermoto heat rac e numb er two but wa s ins tead a spectato r o n th e fence righ t before the drop of the green flag. It turns out that when his team pulled his Honda CR500 off of the stand to roll it to the preg rid . they discovered that the bike had a flat rear tire , and there wa sn't enough time to change it before the start, meaning that M etz would have to go to the se mi to qualify . On Monday, howev er, he parked the peaky 500 to concentrate on the Superm ot o class . In an effort to address the rider s' co mplaints from the randomly drawn grid posit ions at roun d one at laguna Se ca , the AMA implemented dirttrack style scratch heats . w ith eve ryo ne starting fro m the fro nt row . to grid the riders for the heats later in the afternoon , The sys te m seemed w ell-rec ei v ed by most o f the ride rs . Wh en ask ed what he thought the best solutio n was. Jeremy M cGra th said that he felt a supercross-style fo rmat w o uld be the be st so lutio n. w ith heat s , semis and last- ch ance qualifiers . Former AMA Su perbike Cham pion Thomas Stevens was supposed to pa rttcipa te in the S upermol o class at So uth Bo st on on his Yamaha VZ450F. A broken fron t brake rotor. however, side lined St evens afte r a rep lacement cou ldn' t be found in the paddoc k . Wh en asked if the AM A expecte d to get a permanent transponder system in place for the AMA Red Bull Supermoto series this year, AMA Pro Racing vice preside nt An dy Lei sner said that it was unlike ly . " Ther e is a c hance th at w e ca n bo rrow a sys tem from o ne of o ur o the r se ries tow ard s the end o f the season , " he added ... But the sys tem that AMA Pro Racing uses cos ts almost $ 250.000 because we use only the best sys te m availabl e . " He adde d that they felt that it was likely that they w ou ld have a system in place for next seaso n, if eve ryt hing go e s accord ing to plan. Round one winn er Troy Lee De siqn Honda's Jeff Wa rd was co mpeting at Sou th Bost on wi th a broken rib . The injury wa s sustained in a crash at The Fay Myers Suzuk i Supermo to Classic, part of the Suzuki Cy cle Fest in Cop per M ountain, Colorado , the previou s w eekend . Ward said that he was having trouble getting the bike turned and leaned over on the South Bo ston track and wa s in pain whenever he took a breath . He to ughed it out 10 finish second to Chand ler in thei r S upermot o heat race on Satu rday afternoon after W ard led all but the final lap. cue e n e vv s S EPTEM BER 1 0 . 2003 23
