Coupe won four classes, topping the 125cc, 250cc, Open Age and Over 40 Expert classes. Hart finished second to Coupe twice. Coupe, w ho rode a pa ir o f 1974 Honda CR Elsinores , post ed wins in th e Sp ortsman 125cc , 250cc , Open Age and Ov er 40 Expert cl asses . On l y in t h e Sports man 500 c c Expert cla ss did Coupe fail to w in overa ll , after hi s 19 73 CZ 400 expired m echan ically and left the Go ld en State rid er strande d. However, Cou pe d id h a ve to ugh co mpe ti tion in the cla sses he won , as Or e g o n i a n s Grayson Hart and J im Row , Minneso ta 's Mark Skarpohl , and Washington riders Tony Fox and Ron Pom eroy all gave the former National rider a run for his money. In fact , the entire Pomeroy clan fro m Yakima, Wash ington , w a s on han d . The most fa mous m em ber of the family, J im Pomeroy, had a pretty decent da y. After rece ivi ng a special award (see "Inside U ne ," Cycl e News #33 , August 20, 2003 ) , h e showed that he still has what it takes. Al though he was riding an unfam ili ar Yamaha YZ, he got the holeshot in both Over 50 Expert motos and led bo t h in th e ea rly stages , although fellow W ashin gt on ian Ran d y Skiv er sp oil ed Po m eroy's pa rty . J im went 3 - 2 in th e rac e for seco nd ove ra ll, traili ng Skiv er ' s I -I swee p . It was pretty much all Coupe fo r th e rest of the day. Coupe's first ov er all win of th e da y ca m e in th e Op en Ag e Exp ert c lass . Coupe, Hart and t h e Natio na l O p en A g e Ch am p i on Row ra n in t h e top thr ee at t h e unleashing of the first moto. Row got around Hart on the opening lap and closed in on Coupe , but ju st as qu ick l y , Hart pounced upon the CZ rid er and for th e rest of the moto stu ck to Coupe's rear fender. Coupe narrowly edged Hart at the fin ish, wh il e Row netted a 'solid th ird . Moto two was p retty much the sam e story , as Coupe and Hart clashed aga in. Coupe got a break when Hart scored a DNF, wh ich also aided Row in taking a second -overa ll finish , as his 3 -2 performances nett ed th e rider from Portland, Oregon , his fi rst of two such placings on th e da y . Californian Terry Bentl ey (4- 3) finis hed t hi rd . overall. In th e ad joined Intermediate class, CZ rider Dan Cunha used solid 1-2 fin ishes to win overall , follow ed by Mark Sullivan (4 - 1) and Mai co rid er Rolf Greenhi ll (3 -3) . Coupe had pressure from Fo x and Sk arpo hl in th e O ver 40 Expert cl ass, but Coup e didn 't buckl e un d er the I u n eVIls Minnesota's Mark Skarpohl won the Classic 500cc Expert and Sportsman 500cc Expert classes. p r e ssur e . Co upe even tua lly opened up a narrow gap , le avi ng Fox to fe n d off a ha r d -cha rgi n g J im Pomeroy at the finish line. Sk arpohl , who was th e second -placed finish er in m oto one , went 2- 7 for fourth ov erall , followed by Californian J .P. Mor gen (6- 4) . Coupe's day was complete after he scored wins in the Sportsman 125cc Expert class , ahead of Hart (2 -2) and Cal ifornian Ry a n Bast ( 3- 3) , and finally in the Sportsman 250cc Expert class , where Coupe was aga in chased by Hart, who fi ni shed second overall with a 3 -2 t all y .
