AMAIChevy Trucks 250cc U. S. Motocross Championship Round 8: Spring Creek MX Park Ezra Lusk was a strong fifth at Millville with a 4-6. ham returned for the second moto and battled back and forth with Reed, winning that struggle for second, despite having hardly any energy left in his body at the end. "I felt like I did good," Windham sa id of the second moto, "but I was really, really tired. I gave it all I had. I went to the line with nothing in my stomach. I didn't have enough time to put any food in there. If you try to cram food in it and you go to the line, you got a whole different set of problems. Essentially, I went to the line, with my tank at 'E'. It kind of showed; I was able to keep guys at bay, but that's all I wanted to do. I'm really tired right now." As far as the points standings are concerned, Carmichael is still in command, even more so than he was coming into the race. He's got a 63point cushion on Windham, and if he can maintain that margin, he could clinch the title at the second-to-Iast round at Steel City in two weeks. eN Spring Creek MX Park Millville. Perhaps using too much of his energy to get around Windham and to catch Carmichael earlier in the race, Reed later gave way to Ferry and his chance for second overall. Reed still managed to nab third overall with a· 2-4 and will finish out the remaining three rounds riding the thumper. "I was really excited coming into this weekend," Reed said. "This is one of my favorite tracks, but I had everything kind of thrown into my face a little bit. My bike broke in the first moto [Saturday's first practice 10 AUGUST 27, 2003' "" U "" session], and then at the end of the day, a good friend of mine from Australia had a crash in the whoops and is paralyzed from the shoulders down [see Briefly ... j, so it was a pretty tough night last night. You're kind of dealing with that and knowing that anything can happen to us. But to end up on the podium on a new bike is a good thing for me. My 250's back west, so, no going back to that the rest of the year." For Windham, the Spring Creek race didn't go too well, but it could've been a lot worse, for he nearly didn't finish the first moto at all after surviving a spectacular crash and, later on, I an ailing stomach. After a seventh-place start in the first moto, Windham was trying to get around his teammate Fonseca by tripling the new uphill triple jump. When Fonseca double-singled the jump, Windham nearly leapt over his head, only to come up short and case the third jump. By the time he got up and going again, Windham had dropped to ninth. "I got a bad start for what I normally do," Windham said. "Then I crashed trying to go around Ernje. I thought he was going to go for the uphill triple, and he didn't. I cased it because I had to move out so far." With two laps to go, Windham had worked his way up to sixth when he suddenly pulled off the backside of the track for a moment, dropping to ninth at the finish. "After I crashed, I got up, and just being in all the traffic, I got a lot of sand in my throat, and my throat dried out," Windham said. "I was trying to clear my throat, and it just wouldn't. It just kind of snowballed, and I wound up throwing up. I tried to keep going, but my eyes were starting to close ... it wasn't a pleasant thing. If you ever tried to go through the Millville whoops on top of [being sick], it's not an easy thing to do. I started feeling a little claustrophobic, so I pulled my goggles off and kind of regained my composure. It wasn't the heat, I wasn't tired, or anything like that, it was just my throat."
