Yamaha Dealers Series Round 5: Glen Helen Raceway Park O'Connor, who have already had runins with them this season. Fowler, a two-class champion last year, defended his 250cc Expert title, though at the series finale the class was won by O'Connor - his second win of the day. His first win came in the FourStroke Expert class, at the expense of series class champion Robbie King of West Coast, on a Suzuki. Cody Knauss won the 125cc Expert championship and the day's Jared Minor 1871) and Andy Bakk.n 1167) battled In the 125cc and 25Gcc Intermediat. cia. . . . at the final round of the Yamaha Deal.,. His 250cc bid ended abruptly at the start when the plug wire came loose, knocking out his ignition system 100 yards from the starting line. The race was into its second lap before the cause was discovered, so he retired for the moto. Coming back and winning the second race only allowed him to climb back to ninth overall, while Bakken won with a 2-1 tally, and Minor's 3-3 efforts produced a championshipclinching second place overall. STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 20 iders come and go, the faces of the winners change weekly, injuries and illness plague a few, but through all the chaos there is a sort of random order - and John Burr Cycles of Fontana is, again, the top shop after the final round of the Yamaha Dealers Series at Glen Helen Raceway Park. The Alessi brothers, Mike and Jeff, made a brief stopover at home to check the mail, rotate the food in the refrigerator and feed the pets before they trek east again, and they stole some of the thunder of the weekly regulars. Mike rode undefeated to wins in both the Schoolboy and Supermini events, while Jeff took a couple of seconds behind his brother in the Supermini contest after acing the 85cc (12-13) class, stealing some of the glory of series champions Matt Dowell, in the Supermini and 85cc (12-13) classes, and Schoolboy rider A.J. Steinbach. If motocross were a university, then Jared Minor would major in winning. He rode his JBC Yamaha to the top of the standings in two of the hotly contested Intermediate classes to emerge as the top Sportsman of the five-round series. While winning both the 125cc and 250cc B classes, he proved most consistent against rivals Andy Bakken and Micky Griffin. Bakken, riding a four-stroke in three classes for Thousand Oaks Yamaha, entered the series' finale nursing a sore shoulder from a spill during practice on Saturday and a dripping nose from a summer cold. Even though he still won the 250cc B class, a missed round several weeks ago cost him dearly in points. Griffin also missed one previous round and spent the rest of his time wrestling with fellow racers while adjusting riding styles between 125cc 56 AUGUST 27,2003' cue I events as well, racing a Yamaha for the top dealer. Fowler's top performance for the weekly meeting came in the Vet Expert contest, when he defeated two-class champion Matt Tedder on the Montclair Yamaha. Tedder also won the Senior Expert championship, making him one of the four riders to win double championships, along with Minor, Dowell and 50cc (4-6) Stock and Modified champ David Fullmer, on a Montclair KTM. The series ended on a painful note for Senior Intermediate rider Jason Yodogawa. He garnered the series championship after placing fourth in the first moto, but he crashed hard near the start of the second moto and Dani Sani 1168) swept the 125cc Intermediate class in San Bernardino, California, and placed second to Mike Alessi in the Schoolboy contest. Minor also had a 3-3 score and second overall in the 125s, behind Honda-mounted Dani Sani, who blistered both motos. Bakken, who placed second in the first moto, succumbed to heat and hurt in the second moto and faded to fifth overall. In Bakken's absence, Griffin thumped to a runner-up finish for third overall. Many of these top B riders were making their final rides in the class before turning Pro next month, which has a few of the track veteran A riders anticipating some new competition, including Terry Fowler and Sean e n e vv s broke his femur in several spots. He reportedly underwent a seven-hour operation to pin it up and is hinting about retiring from racing. eN &Ien Helen RacewlY Plrk SI.
