AMA Pro Racing licensed riders and credential holders may comment on the proposed rules changes during a 30-day comment period beginning Friday, Aug. 8, through Monday, Sept, 7. Comments can be made on AMA Pro Racing's riders-only website at www.amaproracing.com/ridersonly. After the 30-day comment period concludes, AMA Pro Racing will review any suggested changes before sending the package to the AMA Pro Racing board of directors for final ratification. "In order for us to see positive growth in flat track racing, we're going to have to address the various needs of the community," said Hollingsworth. These rule changes are a key step toward building a more viable series that will benefit those who invest in it." ley (W-R) won the 505cc Pro Sport main, with Jerome Hansen (Hon) second and Dan Adkins (Hon) third. AMA Pro Racing's Duke Finch and Jonathan Beasley were both at the AMA Western Four-Stroke National event at Lakewood, Colorado's Thunder Valley Motocross Park, checking out the facility for a possible AMA 125/250cc National as soon as 2005, according to Don Schneider, the promoter of the four-stroke series. Yoshimura Suzuki is planning on contesting the 1000cc Superstock class in 2004, with Aaron Yates scheduled to give 1he big production bike a shakedown run during an upcoming Daytona Dunlop tire test. Yosh team manag- er Don Sakakura said it was in their plans for next year, "depending on how the machine performance is initially. Preliminary tests' would indicate we would' enter the 1OOOcc Superstock class for next year." Yates is penciled in as the rider, though he's currently in contract negotiations that could be resolved as early as this week. Ben Spies is contracted to run Supersport and Superbike, and Mat Mladin is Superbike only in 2004. Sakakura said that, although the Superstock rules haven't been announced by the AMA, he expects them to be similar to Supers port, which is what they're using to build the GSXR1000. "At this point we're planning on preparing a 1000cc Supersport" machine, he said, adding that he believed many of the Japanese manufacturers would also join the class. The August 19-21 Daytona Dunlop test should answer questions about the feaSibility of running a 1000cc four-cylinder, on DOT tires. "For Dunlop and for our own situation as well, we need to look at the tires," Sakakura said. "I think every-, one's concerned. They're going to pro-' duce 160-165 horsepower with the production engine. I'm sure Dunlop's on top of it, but there's always that concern with tire heat and tire wear." "It is a concern for sure," Dunlop's road race manager Jim Allen said. "They're heavy, and they've got a lot of horsepower." Allen said the new Dunlop DOTs they'd be testing at Daytona were based on what's worked in the past, in both Superbike and Supersport, with updates for safety. "We'll work with construction and compounding that's worked in the 16.5 [inch] size and go with the 17 inch," he said. "The fabric and rubber wiWbe pretty similar to what we put into Superbike [tires]," One complication is that the privateers will be able to run' similar speeds to the factory machines, a situation unlikely in Superbike. "I think it's fair to say anybody can get on a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 and go pretty darn fast with DOT tires," Allen said. During the two-week break in the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship Series, Team Yamaha's Chad Reed has been practicing on the YZ450 four-stroke at some local tracks
