Finishing first in both the 65cc DTX and 65cc Modified classes and eaming the number·9N National plate in the 85cc Modified Premier (7-1 1) division, he brought home more brass from this event than any other rider. Martin earned the necessary points to be awarded the AMA 2003 Youth Dirt Tracker of the Year award, the most prestigious honor that can be earned for any youth dirt tracker under the age of 16 years old, and which is determined by a rider's performance at the National Championships. During a special presentation, Martin was presented this award on this night. Martin is currently in the points lead in the 60cc classes of Lodi Cycle Bowl and the Motowest Goldrush series. He is also sponsored by Stockton Yamaha/Honda, along with AC Racing, Rab Racing, San Joaquin Crome and Penske Racing Shocks, among others. Martin placed first in the 60cc A class and third in the 80cc A event. The 80cc A race was one to watch, as the Fang brothers, Bobby and Anthony, came off the line in front, followed by Cody Anselmi, Martin and Chad Cose. During the white· flag lap, Anselmi went down, tumbling long and hard coming out of the first tum approaching the hiil. That spill gave Martin the only opportunity during this race to gain the third spot. Martin's sister Megan Martin won the Pee Wee Stock C class. Results P/W STK: 1. Scott HamptOn: 2. Sean O'Connor. Finish Line Minis' Ryan Ballard whipped up thrills as spectators watched him earn his first moto win of the season. In moto one of the Combined class, season points leader Thomas Cone, on a Kawasaki. charged his way to a first-place finish. while KTM pumpkin riders Chris Heiney, Cody Doerfler and Morrison, Colorado's Double Vision race team· Coby and Cory Langenfeld . knocked back their throttles and revved their merry way to the victory flag. In moto two, Doerfler rocketed to the head of the class in a holeshot heist. When Doer· fler's back wheel was introduced to Cone's front wheel at the crest of tum one, the meeting bumped the riders out of their spots as the leaders of the pack. Heiney seized the lead. Ballard raced after him in hot pursuit. When Heiney found himself· and his bike· down and out on lap one, Ballard found himself in charge, in first, and being chased by a raging pack of orange and green bikes. Cone weaved, sharkJike, through the masses and reeled in Ballard, who only hZld a bikelength to spare when the spectators lost sight of the dueling duo as they dived into the lower flanks of Berthoud's south track. Every· one expected to see Cone in the lead when the two came up for air. Gasps rippled through the crowd when Ballard trundled into view, hold· ing his lead in a blister-busting grip that took him straight to a checkered-flag triumph. Cone got the gold, while Ballard hauled in his catch of the day: filet of finish line! When asked what he was thinking as he led the final lap, his spunky reply was, "Holy crap!" In the first 65cc (7 ·9) moto, speed gremlin Cone took the lead. took a double and landed smack-dab in a foot of mud. While two flag' gers and an official hoisted Cone from the quagmire, another pumpkin munchkin, Michael Guerette. helped himself to a stellar lead - until he took a comer and took a stellar spill. A hole in the brake cable boded ill for the Thor/Subway/M2R Helmets/B-Line Graph· ics/Aztec Family Raceway-sponsored rider. Upstart Doerfler of Peyton, Colorado, took charge and checked in with his first moto win of the day. In mota two, Guerette hared off with the holeshot, but mechanical problems left him floundering to keep his lead. Cone put the pass on Guerette. Doerfler put the pass on Guerette. The Double Vision racing team put the pass on Guerette. Guerette finally put the kibosh on the passes and hustled to regain some ground. Cone led the pack until the dou· ble that had given him trouble in moto one pulled the rug out from under what would 51 (4·8) 2-STRK/4·STRK I.
