low over the breaker, but a rut before
the transition sent him way right, and
he had to fight to stay on the hill. The
crowd roared when his time of 6.019
was displayed. Disbennet found himself in third and on Beese Wendt's
Harley-Davidson as he came to the
line.
"Former National Champion Beese
Wendt had a lot of races with and
drank a lot of beer with my dad over
the years, and he brought his bike to
the hillclimb to sell it, but he made
sure it was ready for me to ride in
case we had problems like we did this
spring," Disbennet said. "I rode it in
the second round, and I'm going to
try to get a fast run in, but it's a lot
different from my Triumph."
Disbennet wasn't able to negotiate
the breaker well enough to catch
Watson and Strank, so he settled for
third.
"We really appreciate everything
Beese does for us," Disbennet said.
He's a great friend. He always wanted
to see a Disbennet on a Harley."
Strank chose a new starting spot
beside the main groove.
"I chose a new hole because the
main rut had a big S curve in it,"
Strank said. "I saw this line and knew
it would work if I hit just right."
Tiger launched the R 1 up to the
breaker, then he turned it loose. He
kept the Yamaha pinned as he went
off of the last jump. He flew so far off
the top jump that he covered the 40
feet to the timers in the air, stopping
the clocks as he landed. The crowd
cheered for the Pennsylvania rider
and were stunned as the second
6.019 time of the day was displayed
on the timers, matching Watson's
time.
Based upon their second-best
times, Strank Jr. had his third win of
the year by .04 of a second.
"My bike is just unbelievable,
Strank said. "We didn't change a
thing all day. I just needed to get a
good ride in, and it worked out for
us."
"Well the 540 win was good," Watson said. "Now we'll just have to go
to the next one with the bike dialed in
even better."
