Jimmy Jarret nabbed the holeshot but ended up fourth. Watts, who won round nine of the WORCS Series two weeks ago in Minnesota with a last-lap pass on Davis, had it a bit easier this time. The 30year-old Australian ended up taking the checkered flag less than 15 seconds ahead of Garrahan and Davis after having enjoyed a two-minute lead earlier in the race. Yamaha rider Jimmy Jarret finished fourth, 45 seconds behind Watts, while fellow Yamaha rider Steve Leivan finished in fifth two minutes and five seconds off Watts' winning pace. Watts, who rode a MSR/Scott/KBC Helmets/Tag/Michelin/Cycra-backed 450 EXC KTM, said, "Going into the last lap, I knew I had a good lead and was just trying to take it easy and not make any big mistakes. I was cruising down one of the rocky creek beds, and the bike just threw me. It wasn't that big of a deal; I maybe lost 20 or 30 seconds. I picked myself up, and on I went. "Then in one of the last [wooded) sections I got behind a lapper," Watts added. "It was a tough race for everybody, and I just didn't feel like screaming at the guy, so I just waited for a good place to pass. It wasn't until I came out of the woods [coming up to the finish) that I noticed Brian and Ty were so close. So I just turned it up a little bit and raced [the last quarter-mile) to the finish." While Watts made it sound easy, both Garrahan and Davis had to deal with their own problems throughout the day just to challenge Watts at the end. Davis' come-from-behind charge came after he had to stop with clutch problems on lap one. "I had just passed Watts [for the lead) when my bike started making an awful noise," Davis said. "So, at the halfway point, I pulled over to tell my mechanic that I thought it was a loose clutch spring and that I would be stopping at the end of the lap to try and make a repair." Watts took advantage of the unscheduled stop by Davis and took the lead. "When Ty pulled over, I saw it as an opportunity to try and pull away," Watts said. "Jarret and Garrahan were right there as well, so I decided to push it and see if I could put some time on all of them." While Davis stopped to fix his clutch, Watts turned in his fastest lap of the day at 19 minutes and 19 seconds and extended his lead to 43 seconds over second-place rider Jarret. Garrahan, who had fallen off Watts' pace as well, was running third, just 27 seconds behind Jarret. Garrahan, on the Funmart KTM/ Maxxis/Fastway/Sprocket Specialist/Race Tech KTM, said, "I had trouble reading the course on the first few laps and crashed a lot. Then the course started to burn in, and it was easier to make up time. But by the end of lap three, I had to give it all back when I stopped for gas and the quick-fill wouldn't work." During that gas stop, Garrahan went from third to fifth, getting passed by both Kyle Nelson and Leivan. After fiXing the clutch, Davis was now nearly four minutes behind Watts. But he quickly closed the gap on the leader by making a six-lap charge, where he made up an impressive average of 40 seconds per lap on Watts. Davis, on the Montclair Yamaha/ Moose/Race Tech YZ250, said, "We just ran out of'time. Just one more (Above left) Missouri's Steve Leivan rode well in Iowa, crossing the finish line in fifth place. While Garrahan and Davis were making midpack charges, Jarret was holding onto his second-place position, about a minute behind Watts. After getting the holeshot, Jarret settled into third when both Watts and Davis passed him before the first tree section, and then he inherited second when Davis stopped for repairs. Jarret said, "After they passed me, I never really saw Watts or Davis for much of the first lap, but when Ty pulled off, I just tried to pick up my pace and stay with Watts. Garrahan got by me a couple of times, and then he'd crash." During the last two laps both Garrahan and Davis turned in four of the fastest lap times of the day. The fastest lap of the day was Davis' lap seven, which he turned in at ] 8 minutes and 20 seconds, nearly one minute faster than Watts' best lap. During that time, both Garrahan and Davis passed Jarret, Leivan and Nelson. "I had no idea that I was running in fourth," Leivan said. "I got a terrible start and had a hard time passing. The first few laps it was kind of slow going, but I was picking off riders. I never saw Davis or Garrahan pull over in the pits and figured I was running seventh or eighth somewhere behind them. "Eventually all I could do was try and catch the rider in front of me," Leivan continued. "I must have followed him for three laps and finally got by him in one of the tree sections [on lap five). And then out of nowhere Garrahan passed me. And then here eye I e Nelson said, "We [Leivan and Nelson] were in one of the tighter tree sections, and I got hung up, and he gets by and right behind him is Garrahan. Then in the next wooded section Davis makes a pass. I tried to keep up with them for a while, but then I got stuck on an uphill, and that was it for me." "I rode in second for most of the race," Jarret said. "I thought I had a good chance to hold on. But I crashed in one of the woods sections, and Garrahan got by. Then Davis caught me, and he was gone. By then the dust was getting bad, especially in the grass tracks. At times you could hardly see where you were going." But the day belonged to Watts. "Riding in the lead here was a big plus, especially with the dust," Watts said.
