n what many considered to be one
of his greatest performances this
year, six-time World Motocross
Champion Stefan Everts took the
Grand Prix of Lierop by the scruff of
the neck and produced some unbelievable magic, winning the 'ninth
round of the World MotocrossGP
Championship by 32 seconds over
fellow Belgian Joel Smets, and
then backed it up with victory in v.u
the 125cc Grand Prix, this time
leading home another Bel.•
gian rider in Steve Ramon , ..
and local Dutch rider Erik
Eggens. With the two GP wins,
Everts has now won 11 GP overalls
this season, passing his best-ever
effort for a single season when he
won nine GPs in 1997 - he also took
the 64th and 65th Grand Prix victories of his career.
"I'm not looking at the records

looks unstoppable. He
again doubled up in
Holland, winning both
the 125cc and
MotocrossGP classes
with relative ease. He
leads the premier
class and sits fourth
in the 125s, despite
missing all of the
early races
completely.

kept Everts honest in
the 125cc class and
now leads the class
championship by 23
points, despite
winning only one race
so far. Of course,
Everts is part of the
reason Ramon has
only won one race.

the last three races. I really think
Pichon will have trouble turning his
results around - he's really having
trouble at the moment - but Joel
[Smets] is a fighter and won't give up.
I can't forget that, and I expect him to
be pushing me in Germany on the
hard-packed Gaildorf circuit in two
weeks. The last time I rode here two
years ago, I had a DNF. My uncle,
who was very sick [with cancer],
began to cry, and I told him not to
worry. I think he was watchjng over
me today."
It was Everts at his best as he
danced his way around the deep
black sand of tpe Herselsebossen circuit in the south of Holland. Everts
