Rookie Expert Shawn Baer brought his Battlefield Harley-Davjdson/BRP/Metro Racing backed Sportster home third. A large field of 27 riders filled the three heats, and the podium fjnishers had previewed the main by taking the three wins. Lewis had won the first over Powell Performance/WD40's Andy Springsteen and Gutterridge Harley-Davidson's Josh Toungett. Carr seemed to be struggling while Kopp wa. on a roll. While Kopp's fourth-place finish wasn't bad. he still dropped eight points to the champ. Carr's lead is now back up to 28 points. Johnny Murphree is another eight back. Kenny Coolbeth is 56 points back of Carr in fourth. with Rich King rounding out the top five 71 points down. Chris Carr had suffered a scare when he got off hard at the Red Bull Supermoto opener in Laguna Seca a few weeks ago. After taking some time off. Carr headed to South Dakota and swept the two AMA Hot Shoe Nationals just three days before the Hagerstown races. -I wouldn't have won tonight if I hadn't gone out to Sturgis and rode. - Carr said. -I was laid up for 2 1/2 weeks. Going out there and working the rust out felt really good.' Mike Hacker's season seems to be on the upswing as he continues to regroup from last year's injury at the Springfield n. "I'm pretty happy: he said. "I've been training real hard and trying to get focused to get this thing turned around. and it seems to be working. We never did anything to the bike all night. We were fast right out of the truck. I had been two tenths faster than everybody all night. but I knew somebody would pick up the pace in the main. I didn't think it would be a cakewalk. The track had changed a little bit. and everybody had been doing their homework. I figured it would be Carr or Cooibeth. and I think Carr set fast enough a pace that it got us away from everyone else. Toward the end of the race the tire started getting really bad, and Kenny looked like he was catching me a little. It was a good race. I had a great time.- Ceo Roeder II is gaining more and more confidence in his "car track" abilities as his career continues. "The bike was working good; we've been making a lot of progress on these car tracks," Roeder said. '"I'm happy with eighth. It gives us something to build on. We made a ton of changes to this bike, and it feels pretty good. We took it out to Sturgis, and I was happy with it out there. too. We think it's like everybody else is running. We've got some momentum now. We ran good at Sharon and again here tonight; we've just got to carry it over to Sedalia in a cou· pie of weeks.Bill and Carolyn Powell of Powell Racing were in the pits. collecting parts for their 2004 return to the National scene ... We can't afford to go to all the races. but we're going to hit as many as we can." said Bill. who has fought his way back from cancer and vows to be back stronger than ever.
