Travis McCrae, another local boy from livermore, was the man to beat in the 125cc and 250cc Novice classes. McCrae was awesome on this night, winning all four motos he entered. McRae rode the wheels off his Yamaha to take home the two first-place trophies. In the 125cc class, Beau Weigand took runner-up honors with 2-2 finishes aboard his Yamaha. Steve Lovazzano rounded out the top three on his Suzuki, going 6-5. In the 250cc class, Yamaha-mounted C.J. Maria earned second place with 2-2 scores. Third place went to Michael Carnes, who raced to 3-3 finishes and was also riding blue. Club Moto Results Lucy in the Sky with Mutants By RANOY HElM LIVERMORE, CA, JULY 11 Mother Nature provided another warm night in Livermore for round three of the Mutant Motorsportsll MOTO Friday Night Series. The fans came out to watch some racing, and the "mutant" riders delivered. There was plenty of action in all classes, from the Women's to the Pros. Lucy Freer dominated the Women's class, while Mike Newnham and Danny Paladino took wins in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, respectively. Freer, a Honda rider from Pleasanton, won both motos of the Women's class going away. Freer rode her own race and kept the throttle pinned longer than did the rest of the ladies. Orinda's Caroline Szues, aboard her YZ, kept Freer honest but was unable to reel her in_ Szues had to settle for second with a 2-2 talty. The third spot went to Danville's Chelsie Stegemiller, with a 3-3 score. Stegemiller was riding a Honda. With an average of 10 women lining up per night to race, the growth of the sport is quite visible. It's not just for the guys anymore! Concord racer Newnham was on fire in the 125cc Pro class, posting perfect 1 -I mota scores to take the overall for the night. Newnham gated well in both motos and kept the rubber side down long enough to put his Yamaha across the finish line first. Matt McCrummen from Oakley was also flying, but he had to settle for second on this night. McCrummen rode his Suzuki to 2-2 finishes. Finishing third for the night was another Suzuki rider, Brandon Jones, who posted 4-3 finishes to secure third. Discovery Bay's Paladino took the overall in the 250cc Pro class with 1- 1 finishes. The I MOTO-sponsored Paladino rode the smoothest, and it showed each lap. Paladino didn't falter and kept his Yamaha in front of the pack, with plenty of breathing room. Local Livermore boy Auggie Rodriguez also rode consistently and placed second overall with a 3-3 showing. Matt McCrummen, aboard an RM250, took the last podium spot with 5-2 finishes. .-----------~-----,-' ~ z UJ c ": -' UJ ~ <.) ~ in ~ Q. 50 BEG: 1. Christopher Buckman (KTM): 2. Scott Crane (KTM); 3. David Melton SO "Dr. Supercross and Mr. Motocross n split personality by configuring the track for five races in a more motocross fashion and twisting the track back down to supercross shape for two of the series' biggest races. This night featured a two-moto format, with both motos counting toward the overall finish. The track was prepped perfectly. An ultrafast gate of 250cc Experts pounded into the first corner in moto one, with homegrown moto hero Pauly Carpenter pulling off the holeshot. Thomas Burton, Jack Carpenter, Mike Leavitt and Sonny Nighman got roosted. but they were still in the hunt. Jack jumped out to challenge his cousin Pauly for the lead, and Leavitt followed his trail into third. Paul was haulin', and when Jack, the only rider close enough to challenge for the win, went down cornering, Pauly celebrated his win. Leavitt, Nighman, Jack and Burton filled out the top five. Pauly was the odds-on favorite to win, and why wouldn't he be, considering he's the East Coast and West Coast National Four-Stroke Champion? However, it was Jack who took the second-moto lead in corner two. followed closely by Pauly, Nighman, Leavitt and Burton. Pauly was testing a new front fender for White Brothers Honda, and when Nighman gave Pauly a bump-and~run pass, the test was on. Nighman and Pauly went bar to bar, dinging chrome and scratching plastic, until Pauly got bumped again into the grass - but he stayed on the gas and later made the pass stick. Jack had jumped out to extend his lead in a flash, but Pauly was done stalking; he was flat-out hunting him down. Pauly finally wrestled the lead away from Jack as they took the white flag. Paul (1-1) took first overall, and Leavitt (2-3), Jack (4-2), Nighman (3-4) and Burton (5-5) took home the rest of the topfive honors. The next race under the lights at Frozen Ocean will be the Summer Supercross Classic on Wednesday night, August 20. Several more National riders are expected to compete. The Auburn, New York, motocross facility will close out the season with race seven of the Nightcross Series on September 6, followed by a WNYMA points race on Sunday. Results 50 SHAFT: 1. Frozen Ocean Motocross Park By CINDY GIBSON Club Moto: Lucy Freer flies to victory in the Women's class at round three of the Mutant Motorsportsll MOTO Friday Night Series in Livermore, California_ concessions and clean restrooms, this 3-yearold facility provides ample spectator seating and a great view overlooking the entire 5upercross track. The park's motocross track sits adjacent to the supercross track, where day races are normally held. Action began with the 50cc (7-8) class. Dalton Horton clinched the holeshot on his powerful Polini, and he remained in front throughout the entire race. The real battle was just behind Horton; KTM pilot Kyle Gibson held second place, followed closely by Dylan Coleman until fourth-placed Hayden Steinberg made a quick dart into second place in turn two. His tenure there was short-lived, though, as Steinberg spun out soon after that pass, but he made a quick recovery and was now in third place. A fierce battle ensued between Coleman and Steinberg, both aboard their orange machines. Horton took the checkered flag with a first-place victory to celebrate his ninth birthday. Moto two packed more action into the first lap than any other race of the evening. Horton took the holeshot again, followed by Coleman in second, Gibson in third, Steinberg in fourth and Ryan James in fifth. Horton crashed on the first jump, losing the lead to Coleman. Gibson made a sharp dive in tum two to take second place for a short while, until Coleman made a return pass in the whoops. Steinberg dived in deep in the second tum to gain second place, until Coleman took a bad spill just beyond the jump following the whoops, where he had just gained first place. With Horton and Coleman down, Steinberg took control of first place, Gibson took second, and James took third - all within the first lap. Soon after the beginning of the second lap, Horton came from behind to take control of third place. Seven-year-old Steinberg picked up the firstplace trophy. "Mill Creek is my favorite track,n Steinberg said afterward. "The best part of the track is the doubles!" Steinberg also mentioned that his top competitor, Dylan Coleman, and his dad, Rodney, helped him learn how to ride. Dakota Simmons came ready to rumble and took the 250cc Amateur-class wins. Simmons came from the heat-race win ready to pounce at the green light, and he went to the front of the field in the combined 250cc/Traii Rider main event. Kenny Kondoudis, Brian Neblett and Sean Smith all had a shot at the lead, but Simmons held firm under pressure and took a close win, over Kondoudis. Neblett took a close Trail Rider win, over Smith and Steve Parrish. Simmons was also a winner the Mad Dog
