was the longest of the day, combining Middle Alder Trail with the Bear Creek Trail. Checks 13 and 14 stole cumulative time from the racers, making up the biggest scores of the day. Lykke and Hatch had the speed, as they were the only two riders to score a 3 and a 9. But Hatch really started cooking at check 14, as he beat Lykke by 57 seconds, as Lykke barely made the minute, coming through at the 59-second mark! All the rest of the rocket riders scored 4s and lOs or more. After another gas stop, racers were sent down the West Alder Trail for another lap. It was here that Hatch took the lead, as he rode to the only score of 3, coming through just five seconds before the flip of the card. Pepper was next, missing the flip by just one second. Hawkins was third-quickest, only eight seconds behind Pepper. This led the racers to what would have been the final test going up the Palisades Trail. However, it started raining and hailing so badly that only the first few competitors got through the nasty hill climb without getting stuck in the large bottleneck. Reports had dozens of bikes lined up or "laid out," as exhausted racers tried to scale the slippery rocks. The only fair thing to do was to tum that fmal check out into an observation check, so the results would not be skewed by the mayhem, so that's what the promoters did! And Hatch ended up taking the win. "When I raced Ohio last month, it was a real eye-opener for time-keeping," Hatch said. "Today in the morning, I rode a little too tight, but by the afternoon, I wicked it up. Next year I'd like to get back in to riding more technical stuff and riding more enduros." Pepper, one of the local favorites aboard a YZ250F Yamaha, finished third behind Lykke. "My Apex Yamaha YZ250F worked really awesome in the rocks," Pepper said. "But when we started ripping down the fire roads during the 84 mph section, I was definitely searching for more power." For Lafferty, fourth place was not what he was expecting today, and he didn't have any excuses. "I got beat! I hate getting beat, but I got beat!" Lafferty said. "These rocks are different than the rocks back east. It's a lot faster and not that technical, but I liked it more once it started raining and slowed things down a bit." Schmelze, who rounded out the top five overall, was just off his mark throughout the day. "I was a little off today, because I had to work the graveyard shift this week at work," Schmelze said. "I missed the flip of the card by just seconds a bunch of times." eN r-----------------------------------------------~~ o Address City _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ State Phone Boot Hill Enduro Del Norte, Coloredo Results: July Z7, ZDD3 [Round7l O/A: 1.
