AMA Pacific Northwest Championship Series Round 2: Albany Motorsports Park STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT ALBANY, OR, JULY 20 \V)amaha-mounted Tiger Lacey and l!J Suzuki jockey Sam DeAtley demolished the competition at round two of the AMA Pacific Northwest Championship Series, held at Albany Motorsports Park. Lacey, fresh off impressive performances at the Canadian Motocross Nationals, topped the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes, while Idaho's DeAtley won the 80cc (12-15) class and also scored a win in the first Supermini moto. Only a moto-two DNF in the Supermini class ended what would have been a perfect day in the minicycle ranks for the rider from Lewiston. The younger of the two DeAtley brothers, Matt, was victorious in the Supermini (9- 11) class - this coming after he finished third overall in the 80cc (7- 11) class. Lacey's stellar day started off with his win in the 250cc/Open A/Pro class. Despite brutally tough competition from Mike Corder, Ryan Huffman and Dan Moore, Lacey walloped the competition in both motos. Lacey grabbed the lead at the start of the first moto, followed by rookie Pros Ryan Thompson and Dale Ainslie. Moore, riding a Suzuki, got around Ainslie to settle into second, although Lacey had the lead well in hand and easily won. Corder overcame a poor start to finish third, while Ainslie, Terry Hamness Jr., Tyler Fick and J.R. Vielle completed the top seven. Moto two was much the same for the MotoSport Outlet/Maxxis/So. Calbacked Lacey. After darting to the head of the pack, Lacey remained there, again leaving Moore and Corder to battle for second - a position that ultimately went to Moore, along with second overall. Corder (3-3), Hamness (5-4) and Ainslie (4-5) rounded out the top five. In the adjoined 125cc B class, Hawaii's Bronson Hethcote and Washington's Todd Nelson split moto wins. It was Hethcote (4-1), though, who garnered the overall. Nelson, winner of moto two, was even less consistent, earning fourth overall with a 1-5 tally. Central Oregon rider Ross Miller (3-3) thumped to second overall, while Scott Bloom (2-4), Nelson and Sam DeAtley (5-2) completed the top five overall. Lacey came back several motos later to score the overall 125cc A/Pro victory. Huffman, riding a Yamaha, won the first moto. Lacey got a poor start and, after getting past Moore midway through the moto, trailed Huffman at moto's end. Moore, Ainslie, Fick and Bryan Clevenger followed. Lacey, who this year finished the AMA 125cc West Supercross Series ranked number lOin the final points standings, used one of his patented holeshots to devour the competition in moto two. After suffering his only loss of the day in moto one, the 20-year-old from Wolf Creek, Oregon, remained in the lead for keeps. Moore ran second, although the veteran rider had his hands full with 28-year-old Huffman, who kept the pressure on Moore and slipped past the rider from Yakima on the final lap to trail Lacey at moto's end. Lacey (2-1), Huffman (1-2), Moore (3-3), Ainslie (4-4) and the former minicycle speedster Fick (5-5) rounded out the top five overall. Honda CRF450R riders Miles Warren and Guy Tow were the cream of the crop in the adjoined 250cc B class. Warren won both motos. Tow (2-2) kept Warren honest and finished second overall, ahead of central Oregon's Brandon Kentner (3-3), Gerritt Schaffer (5-4) and Taft Matherly (6-5). (KTM): 5. Cooper Garro (KTM). 65 (9-11): I. Neither, though, was able to put the clamps on Moore, who won both motos. Terry (2-2), Mike (3-3), Darryl Zumstein (4-4) and Jay Jackson (5-5) rounded out the top five. Zumstein's day could hardly be considered a wash, as the 45-yearold Washingtonian carded a win in the Over 40 A class, with 1-1 finishes. Former Alaska State Champion Jeff MacDonald challenged Zumstein in moto two and finished second overall with a 3-2 tally. Dave Silvestri finished second in moto one, garnering third overall. Thirty-one riders filled the starting gate for the combined Supermini (9-11) and (12-15) classes. Matt DeAtley and Danny Gubser came out on top of the two classes, respective· Iy. Matt used a 2-1 tally to top Tevin Tapia for the overall Supermini (9-11) win. Although Tapia (one of the dominant performers in the recent CMC Pac West Series) won moto one, he couldn't duplicate that performance in moto two, and Matt won overall. Sam DeAtley dominated moto two but didn't make it more than a lap into moto two before being sidelined for good. This greatly attributed to Gubser's win, and his 2-1 tally scored him the Supermini (12-15) overall win, ahead of Aaron McClinton (4-4) and Shawn O'Brien (7-2). eN Alnny Motorsports Park Alnny, Oregon Results: July 20, 2003 (Round 21 5\ (4·8) OIL·INJ: 1.
