Spring Creek MX Park Kann Opens It Up Bv GEORGE AND KAREN HODKINSON MILLVILE, MN, JULY 13 Mike Kann, contesting the i 25cc A and 250cc A classes, would be the rider to beat on this day at Spring Creek MX Park. Nearly 900 entrants made it out for the event, which was sponsored by accessory· and-service shop Vaith's Sled and Cycle. Owner Greg Vaith handed out numerous prizes from companies such as Spy, Hansen's and VP Fuels, to name just a few, as well as certificates good for products and labor at his store. The event was round six of the highly prestigious Spring Creek Super Series, which continues to draw the best talent in the upper Midwest area. This event was also a Honda contingency race. The highly competitive 250cc A class had 36 riders lined up on the gate, including national number 40, Pro rider James Povolny. At the start of moto one, Alex Bumgardner absconded with the holeshot on a Trimbles Honda/GPS Racing CR450. followed by Nate Broughton, on a Moto Primo/MSR/Maximabacked YZ250. Kann was third on his Pro Action/Guiltee Clothing YZ250. Povolny got a bad start and was outside the top 10. After the first lap, Broughton took over the lead, with Kann now second, Bumgardner third, Curt Beloy fourth and relatively unknown CR250 rider Andrew Thyberg of McConnell, Illinois, in fifth. Broughton and Kann battled hard the rest of the five-lap moto. Broughton was the winner, and Kann had to settle for second. Thyberg worked his way up to third. Povolny was fourth, and Beloy was fifth. Povolny sat out the second moto due to back problems, making things a bit easier for the rest of the field. Beloy grabbed the holeshot, followed by Travis Oellien, who had finished sixth in moto one. and Craig Schwarz. who had finished eighth in moto one. After the first lap, however, Broughton had the lead, willi Beloy second, Kann third. Schwarz fourth and Thyberg fifth. By the end of lap two. Kann was closing in on Beloy. and after makjng the pass, he went after Broughton. On the fourth lap, Kann made his move and passed Broughton for the moto and overall win. Thyberg was third again, followed by Beloy and RM250-mounted Matt Maier of Hartford. Wisconsin. Luck was also with Kann in the 125cc class. In the smaller 20-rider field, Broughton won the first moto, over Kann, Thyberg, Maier and Troy Goehrs. Moto two, however, saw Broughton suffer a horrendous crash in the sand wash; he was slow to get up, but he did finish the race, in 18th place. Kann gladly took the second-moto win over Maier, Jesse Johnson and Jake Bostrom. Kann took the overall. Team Green rider Cody Gilmore of Spencer, Iowa, flat out dominated the 125cc B and 250cc B classes, winning every moto. In the first 250cc B moto, Trevor Tuma moved through the 33-rider pack to claim second, with Jason Doyle third. In moto two. Tuma claimed second again, and Doyle was third again. Celebrate Barona's 30th Bv HOMER EUBANKS RAMONA, CA, JULY 13 As part of its 30th birthday celebration, Barona Oaks has created a four-race CMMC Summer Series. Riders must race three of the four events to qualify for gift certificates and plaques, which will be given out in all classes. Getting off to a good start at the first race of the series were repeal winners Tommy McAdams, Joshua Huerta. Jake Gagne and Jesse Casillas. Casillas and Tim Beatty entertained the fans in round one's 125cc Pro event. Beatty got the holeshot. and Casillas was trying everything to make a pass. As the event wore on, the patience of the two riders wore down. A block·pass occurred down in the wash section, and Beatty held the lead. Shortly thereafter, Beatty seemed to slow, allowing Casillas to pass. Then, on the next right·hander, a hard-charging Beatty elbowed Casillas off the track. Back out front, Beatty went on to win. However, Beatty chose not to race moto two, and Casillas won the overall by default. Casillas was able to get in more saddle time as he went 1·1 in the 125cc Open con· test. Anthony Charette had a good day in the 125cc (12-15) class, but dropping his KTM in the new whoop section may have cost him the overall in the 125cc Intermediate class. Charette took repeat wins in the age-group contest and won moto one of the Intermediate class, but McAdams took the overall honors in the Intermediate class after leading Charette throughout the second moto. Charette pres· sured McAdams all race long but dropped his KTM while trying a pass. Huerta and Michael Hall provided most of the action in the 85cc Intermediate and Super· mini races. Huerta proved more adept at getting the holeshot and was able to remain ahead of Hall all day. Once the event was totaled up, Huerta took both class overall wins, with Hall a close second. Dakota Gamer was consistent in both the Intermediate events, putting in a 3-3 showing. Gagne appears to own the 65cc class at Barona Oaks. Gagne took repeat wins in the 65cc Open class after first besting Everett Holcomb and then Garrett Jackson. In the 65cc (9-11) class, Gagne had to earn the overall after once again finishing ahead of Garrett Jackson in moto one. In the second moto, Dillon Huddleston showed Gagne the quickest way around the track. Huddleston had finished sixth in moto one and surprised Gagne with his speed in moto two. Gagne remained glued to Huddleston's rear fender throughout the event, but when the checkers came out, it was Huddleston edging out Gagne for the win. However, Gagne's 1·2 showing was good for the overall. Taylor Masoner ran away with the Women's class win. Masoner scored repeal wins. Tiffany Neville placed second in moto one but didn't finish moto two. Nicole Weis· bruch went 3·2 for the day to earn second overall. Stephanie Lurcook finished third. Polini pilot Starr Savage won the 50cc (7 -8) Stock and Modified classes with repeat eN wins in both.
