BMW Motorrad USA. the importer and distributor of BMW motorcycles in the United States, is celebrating 80 years of motorcycling by shattering yet another sales record for the first half of 2003, according to BMW. CapitaliZing on the momentum and success of the first quarter, sales have increased 19 percent at the half-year mark over the same period last year. BMW says. The surge in BMW motorcycle sales is fueled by continued consumer interest in the R 1150 RT Sport Tourer (up 12 percent over the same period last year), the R 1150 Rand R 1150 RA Roadsters (up 21 percent over the same period last year), and the single-cylinder F 650 CS and F 650 CSA (up 34 percent over the same period last year). Sales of BMW's Dual Sport R 1150 GS Adventure more than doubled during the first half of 2003, according to BMW. The AMA has announced that three women and four men will travel to Lavarone, Italy. in September to represent the United States in the Trial des Nations. The men's team will be a repeat of the 2002 team that finished a close second place in the "B" group in Portugal. Joining team captain Geoff Aaron. a six-time AMA National Champion and 1O-year Trial des Nations veteran. will be riders Chris Florin, Travis Fox and Andy Johnson. The men's team will compete on September 28. The women's team, which will compete on September 27. will be Nicole Bradford, Kerrie Brokaw and Andrea Davis. Bradford and Brokaw were members of last year's U.S. team: this will be Davis' first time competing at the Trial des Nations. Also representing the USA will be Martin Belair. men's team manager, Ted Gansberger. women's team manager. and Roger Ansel, Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) delegate. aron was the top individual finisher in the 2000 Trial des Nations "B" group. and the U.S. men's team took home the 2000 International Trophy for winning "B" group. The 2000 event also marked the first time a women's class was included. The men's Trial des Nations course consists of 18 sections, and the women's course consists of 12 sections: the men and the women both run their respective course twice, In addition to being penalized for" dabbing," or touching a foot to the ground, riders are penalized a maximum of five points per section if they have a "failure" or if they don't cover a section within the prescribed 90-second time limit. There is also an overall time limit, based on the total number of riders. == I The 26th Telefonica Dakar Rallye in 2004 will, for the first time since its inception in 1977, see a three-rider team of American racers participating. Backed by KTM Sportmotorcycle USA and Red Bull, the team will consist of two veteran riders - Larry Roeseler and Paul Krause - who, between them. have more than 60 years of off-road racing experience around the globe. Team member number three has yet to be chosen. In fact. KTM has decided to conduct an unprecedented, nationwide search for the third rider, though it's not a contest you're going to see on TV. Instead, the search for the third rider will be determined based on his or her offroad racing background, capability to make good decisions despite enormous fatigue, adaptability to foreign circumstances and ability to project a positive image for America and the team, according to KTM. You see, the 2004 Telefonica Dakar Rallye will also witness for the first time a race within the race, wherein two-rider teams compete for their respective countries. It'll be modeled along the lines of the Motocross des Nations, the Trial des Nations and the The FIM has announced the two European rounds that will make up the 17round 2004 Supercross World 100 AUGUST 6,2003' cue I e n e VIr S ISDE. In other words, expect it to be a "Rallye des Nations," a sort of world team championship of desert racing decided by how well a country's two top-placing racers do in the dash to Dakar. AMA Pro Racing will conduct an auction of rider apparel from several top riders on www.USMotocross.com. with the proceeds going to the Clayton Memorial Foundation. AMA Motocross racers Mike Brown, Sean Hamblin, Sebastien Tortelli and Kevin Windham have donated their personal jerseys for the auction, the first of which will begin Monday, August 4. Motocross fans will be able to log on to the Auction section of USMotocross.com, the official website of the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship, and place their bids in the eBay-style auction system. AMA Pro Racing will be making two rider jerseys available for bidding for the August 4 auction, which begins at 12 p.m. Eastern and ends at noon, Friday, August 8. Another auction will start two weeks later, Monday, Aug. 18, with more to come later. "The online auction will be another great opportunity for the Clayton Memorial Foundation to generate much needed funds to help injured motorcycle racers," says Judy Klinger, treasurer for the Foundation. "To date, the Foundation has disbursed over $380,000 to 69 injured racers. The funds generated from the auctions will definitely make a difference to racers that have unfortunately been injured, and it is our goal to continue helping these racers for many years to come. On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank AMA Pro Racing and the racers involved for their generosity." Formed in 1989 by the publishers of Cycle News, the Clayton Memorial Foundation's mission is to continue giving financial aid to riders who are injured in competitions sanctioned by organizations which are, in sole opinion of the board of directors, bona fide motorcycle sanctioning bodies, according to the Foundation. As announced on July 21, round two of the AMA Red Bull Supermoto Championship will take place on August 30 at South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Virginia. It was announced earlier in the year that the series would visit Copper Mountain Ski Resort outside of Denver, Colorado. but that event will not take place. AMA Pro Racing associate director of commercial development Chris Bradley cited a number of environmental and logistical concerns as the primary reasons the series will not visit Copper Mountain. "It proved to be impossible to construct a track that would meet AMA Pro Racing criteria," said Bradley. "When we announced the AMA Red Bull Supermoto Championship in March, we believed that the Copper Mountain site could be suitable, but unfortunately, that's just not the case." The opening round of the inaugural AMA Red Bull Supermoto Championship took place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, July 11-13. The six-race series will conclude in Las Vegas on Nov. 21 as part of the AMA Awards Banquet. Details for the remaining three rounds are being finalized and will be announced shortly, according to theAMA. The Springfield Mile that takes place every Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend at the Springfield fairgrounds will be, for the first time in history, altered to allow dedicated dirt track fans to attend both the Harley Davidson 100th Anniversary and The Springfield Mile doubleheader. If history would have remained the same, the events would have conflicted. and our devoted fans would have been compromised as to what event they were going to attend, the IMDA says. Therefore, the IMDA concluded that it was in the best interest of the fans to reschedule the Springfield Mile for September 27-28. From famous names and faces to an unparalleled collection of exquisitely preserved and restored motorcycles, the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum will be filled with the industry's brightest stars and rarest classics on October 45, according to the AMA. This weekend event combines the 2003 Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction, which annually honors motorcycling's best-loved personalities and pioneers, with the by-invitation-only second annual Concours d'Elegance, a showcase of over 100 of the country's finest, privately owned classic motorcycles. "This is our weekend to celebrate the amazing people and machines that have inspired America's passionate love affair with motorcycles," said Mark Mederski, executive director of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. "There is no other event that brings together such a priceless collection of living legends and their stories in one venue and then immortalizes their achievements for future generat.ions." As announced in June, 2003, Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductees include several of America's most successful and best-known motorcycle racing stars, including AMA Supercross legend Jeremy McGrath and Harley-Davidson factory stars Jay Springsteen and Scott Parker. They will be joined by industry mavericks. like Hollywood stunt star Debbie Evans, whose work most recently awed motion picture audiences in The Matrix: Reloaded and The Fast and the Furious. Both the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction ceremony and the Concours d'Elegance will take place at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, located on the 23-acre campus of the AMA, just outside of Columbus, Ohio. Amateur motocrosser Brandon Kunkel suffered a lacerated liver in a crash at Barona Oaks in Ramona, California, on July 20. Kunkel, who rides for Team ECC (Escondido Cycle Center), was life-flighted to Children's Hospital but is now on eN the mend from his injuries.
