AMA Pacific Northwest Championship Series Round 1: Washougal Motocross Park Ryan Huffman 11121 and Konnrad Kuest 1501 battle during the second 250cc Pro moto at Washougal Motocross Park, site of round one of the AMA Pacific Northwest Championship Series. Huffman won the 125cc Pro class and finished second in 25Occ. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, JULY 6 ill amaha-mounted Ryan Huffman V and Suzuki rider Cole Siebler went head to head at the opening round of the AMA Pacific Northwest Championship Series, held at Washougal Motocross Park. In the end, both riders scored one overall win apiece: Huffman won both motos to capture the 125cc Pro class win; Siebler and Huffman split moto wins in the 250cc Pro class, with Siebler winning overall. Nearly 700 riders from four Western states were on hand for the Scott USA/Cycle Country Honda/Suzukibacked opener, the final race before the upcoming AMA 125/250cc National here in late July. Several of the riders competing in the National were on hand to get in additional track time before the "Big Show," including Huffman and Siebler. Huffman, riding the Washougal Motocross Park/Scott/No Fear-supported Yamaha, bolted to the head of the field at the start of the first 125cc Pro moto, trailed by Washington's Dan Moore and Siebler. Huffman quickly opened up a huge lead, while Moore did all he could to hold off Siebler, who made the trek from Emmett, Idaho. Siebler, though, displaced the former AMA National number holder to settle into second, although Huffman was long gone by then, en route to an easy win. Moore, Tyler Fick and rookie Pro James Hamilton filled out the top five. Moto two was again Huffman's; while Siebler did improve his start, Huffman proved to be the undisputed king of the 125cc class, polishing off his 1- 1 sweep of the class with a decisive win. Siebler again trailed Huffman at the finish, leading Moore (3-3) into the top three. Second-year Pro Trevor Brooks (6-5) garnered fourth overall, followed by Hamilton (5-6), Fick (4-10) and Bryan Clevenger (12-4). In the combined 125cc B class, another of the strong contingent of Idahoans, Jake Weimer, trounced the competition in both motos. Despite starting in the second wave of riders some 16 seconds behind the Pro riders - Weimer caught up with the tail end of the Pro pack in both motos and scored a 1-1 win. Local rider Mark Bunker and Kawasaki rider Philip Ehnat traded second-place finishes, but the position went Bunker's way on a 3-2 tally. Huffman was rock-solid in the first 250cc Pro moto, grabbing the lead from the get-go and remaining there to the finish. Siebler got a midpack 56 JULY 30. 2003' G Y G I e start and spent much of the moto picking off numerous riders before eventually finishing second to Huffman, again some 10 seconds back. J.R. Vielle followed Siebler through the field and finished third, while Konnrad Kuest, Terry Hamness, Moore, Jason Matthews, Californian Josh Cavanough, Fick and Don Bisceglia rounded out the top 10. Moto two saw the Honda CRF450Rmounted Hamness leading the 23rider field, but the former National number-g3 rider bobbled in the whoops, and Huffman and Siebler both darted past him. Siebler outjumped Huffman to take the lead on lap three, and the American Suzuki/Fly-backed rider held it to the finish. Huffman faded to fourth but came back strong late in the moto. Huffman, who has been struggling with severe arm pump, mounted a last-lap charge that took him past both Kuest and Moore to slash into Siebler's lead. The two were only seconds apart as they entered the whoop section leading to the finish line. Siebler (2-1) got the nod for the win, as well as overall, followed by Huffman (1-2) and the impressive Kuest, whose 4-3 placings netted the Spokane rider third overall. Moore (6-4) and Hamness (5-5) rounded out the top five overall. Suzuki-mounted Tommy Weeck was among the scant few doubleclass winners. The Washingtonian posted wins in the 85cc (7-1 1) and Supermini (7 - 11) classes. Weeck had brutally tough competition from a pair of fellow RM riders, as Tevin Tapia and Mikey Schmeck challenged Weeck in both Supermini (7-11) motos. Tapia (2-2) placed second overall, followed by Schmeck (3-3), Cameron Russell (5-4) and Idaho's Houston Keane (6-5). In the 85cc (12-15) class, Oregonians Joel Lopez and Danny Gubser each posted moto wins. However, neither could duplicate his winning performance in his other moto, and n e vv s they finished sixth and eighth overall, respectively. Lance Phillips used a 2-2 tally to win overall, followed by central Oregonian Ben Anglen (2-2), Chad Smith (4-4), Westley Johnson (6-5), Brad Goodson (5-6) and Lopez (1-12). Weeck was also strong in the 85cc (7 -11) class, as he posted his second overall win of the day via a 2- 1 tally. Schmeck rode at a rapid pace to win moto one (again after a close threeway battle with Tapia and Weeck). Schmeck (1-2) scored second overall, trailed by Tapia (3-3). Drew Mitchell (5-4) and Suzuki rider Alec Watts (4-5). Gubser overcame his woes from the earlier 85cc age-group contest to decimate the competition in the Supermini (12- 15) class, where he won both motos. Smith, Lopez, Phillips and Anglen carded top-five placings. CN WI.houUII Motacross PlltI WI.houUII, WI.hingtlln Rosults: July 6, 2003 [Round 11 51 (4-6) STK: I. Nathan Haas (Pol): 2.
