if he started very well. He was leading until section 10, where jumping on a high stone, he touched a flag and it rolled away, so he carded a five. At the same section, Lampkin, just behind him, cleaned it. This was the turning point. At the end of the first lap, Lampkin led with six points, then came Marc Freixa with nine and Fujinami with 10. All the others were quite distant. Spaniard Tony Bou was in fourth position, with 19, just one point less than Raga and Marc Colomer. On the second lap, Lampkin pulled out the stops and rode with incredible confidence and determination: He cleaned the whole loop! His total of six points against the 24 of FUjinami, who overtook Freixa and gained the runner-up position, amazed all the spectators. Still, it was a podium that was all Honda-Montesa. Cabestany climbed from eighth to fifth place thanks to a good "13," while Raga grabbed the fourth position. DAVTWD Organizers tried to make the competition more difficult on day two, modifying five sections, but the top riders continued their high performances. This time Fujinami was very determined and confident, and he collected nine cleans in the first nine sections. Lampkin on the contrary, fived section four (one of the modified sections) and lost two dabs in section nine. Before the last indoor section, Fujinami led with only three marks. Lampkin was behind him, with five points more. But the battle changed suddenly when Fujinami used too much throttle and fell down on the first big log of section 15. Lampkin cleaned it. The two rivals arrived tied at half competition, with Fujinami ahead on cleans. Freixa was third, but he already had 13 points. On the second loop, Lampkin crashed in section nine, and for the pain in his thigh and hip he also fived section 10. Fujinami fived section 12, but his advantage was enough to put him on the top step of the podium and pick up his fifth win of this season. Lampkin kept the runner-up position, while Cabestany overtook Freixa for the third place thanks to his second excellent loop (six marks, same as Fujinami). eN Italian &P Sestriere, Italy Results: July 12-13, 2003 (Round 7 af 101 DAY 1: I.
