Lewis pulled his second double win day of the week with a victory in 505 Mod. Californina's Stewart Barber Jr. grabbed the holeshot and looked to be on his way to a victory, but a red flag stopped the race just past the midway point. On the restart Barber's knee closed his petcock, handing the lead to Lewis. He rode to the checkers with William Stevens III of Bay City, Michigan, and Bryan Hazel of Albion, New York, second and third. So far Lewis' record is perfect in every final he has raced. Ricky Marshall led every lap in 600cc Modified, but there was a heck of a race behind him. Five different riders held potential podium positions, but it was Dan Fishman of Le Grand, California, and Robert Jones of Mechanicsville, Virginia, in second and third by the checkered flag. Aaron King won the 400cc Mod race after a second-place start. Travis Sprong of Somerset, Indiana, rode to second, with Matt Rogers of Yassar, Michigan, in third. The Pro Sport final saw several red flags early, but that didn't deter Kyle Meiers of Esconaba, Michigan, from putting it on last year's co-Horizon winners Logan Myers and ~Award NicKY Cummings, who came home second and third'. THURSDAY, 125CC AND UNDER SHORT TRACK As the young riders returned for another afternoon of Short Track action, the race for the Grand Championships was shaping up. The Grands crown overall Champions in ea~h class based on combined points in their respective finals. At the conclusion of the day's races, only one race on the TT track remained in the title chasesJor the youngsters. Ethan Gillim of Owensboro, Kentucky, in the 50cc Pee Wee 4-8 kept his perfect streak alive as he went 3 for 3, winning his third final in a row, accumulating 69 points. Cole Anderson placed second and is second in points with 50, Nick McFadden is third in the title chase with 49 points. In the 5.0cc Junior 4-6 class, Brian Atkinson of Manquin, Virignia, vaulted to the fron! to earn his first podium finish of the day and his first win. Nick McFadden was second, with Ethan Gillim third but still leading the points chase. Ian Keith from Brimfield, Illinois, charged toward the front from third and took the lead for good after a restart to keep his win streak alive in the 50cc Senior 7 -8. Both Jake Lewis of Princeton, Kentucky, who got the holeshot and came home second, and Bailey Spence of Rising Sun, Maryland, who finished third, Ricky Marshall, J 5, of Solon, Ohio, realized a dream when he was awarded the 2003 AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award at the AMA Progressive Insurance Dirt Track Grand Championships. "This means the world to me," Marshall said. "I have been dreaming about this award since they created it. I have been chasing Nick Cummings and Logan Myers forever, and now my name is right there with theirs and the others who have won this award." Marshall grew up in a racing family. "My dad is my dirt track hero," Marshall said. "So the Horizon award means a lot. Now I can't wait for my 16th birthday so I can turn Pro Sport. I want to be a professional dirt tracker. I'm not even thinking about road racing. I want to be a dirt tracker." Marshall appeared to feel comfortable all week as he dominated the 600cc Mod class, winning every race. On The Mile, J 0 points down in the 505cc Mod, he pulled off the win and won his second Graond Championship of the week. Remember the name Ricky Marshall. Hayden Gillim rolled into second place early in the race. Tony DavilJa of Pleasanton, California fought his way to third. With three wins, Martin leads the class at 69 points, followed by Davila second with 49 and Gillim's 45. Sportsmanship and great racing were the order of the day in the 85cc DTX 9-13 class. A tight race saw the lead swap several times between heat winners Cody Anselmi of Lodi, California, and Austin Greenland from Spring Mills, Pennsylvania. Greenland came out on top but offered to share the victory lap with his rival Anselmi. Both rode the lap of hOAor holding an end of the checkered flag. The Pro Sport 505cc class raced for the fourth day in a row. And Logan My"rs was back on the gas, winning for the second time this week. Ben Morton of Farmington, illinois, earned his best fin.is-h of the week, with a second, and Nicky Cummings finished third. cue I e FRIDAY, 125 CC AND UP TT The riders returned to The Arena on Friday to find a manicured TT track identical to the Memorial Day Weekend Progressive Insurance Grand National track. After a long front straight, a challenging six-foot jump greeted riders in the infield section, followed by a run to a tight right-hander that eventually led to the short track backstretch. Riders then charged through the short track turn three and four corners toward the finish line. The demanding TT would decide the Grand Championships in the youth division. Ethan Gillim continued his winning ways by sweeping the 50cc Pee Wee 4-8 class and winning the 50cc Junior 4-6, earning Grand Championships in both classes. Californian Mike Martin rode a seemingly conservative race to third in the 65cc Modified 7 -11 Premier class. Although Hayden Gillim won the race, Martin won the war and the Grand Championship.
