back, and no one was behind me." Sellards was suffering from the flu and began to fade at the halfway point. Hughes moved into third, but he would eventually have company from Jesseman, who really started to pick up the pace. Jesseman passed several riders by diving outside of a left-hand turn in the mechanics' area and then beating his rival to the inside of the following right-hander. He passed Hughes there to take third and then headed for Langston. Meanwhile, Sorby crashed out, and my Own Race: 125cc 1] ~® Brett Metcalfe 5th (5-5) The Aussie continues to look stronger every weekend, and at Unadilla he was so strong his team actually had to hold him back. "I have teammates fighting for a championship," admitted Metcalfe, "so I need to help them. I know they would do the same thing for me." Metcalfe backed away from his teammate Langston in the second moto and also aJlowed Hughes by him on the last lap. 1] @@ Hughes and Metcalfe late in the race. With two laps to go, he even got within sight of Langston, but he ran out of time before he could make a pass. "The racing was fun today," Langston said. "It felt like the motos were 10 minutes long. But then when Brown caught me, it was like the set, but Langston's rear shock began to fade, slowing him in the final laps. With two laps to go, he bounced off the track after leaping out of Gravity Cavity, and Jesseman took advantage to take second. early, with Hughes and Jesseman right behind. Unfortunately, Jesseman longest three laps of my life." On the final lap, Metcalfe moved over for Hughes, giving Hughes enough points to land on the overall podium. He gated much better in the second go-around, about sixth, but this time he couldn't make up any more ground and faded to ninth. ~@ Branden Jesseman 6th (2-11) The 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross champ has been fast in his return from an injured thumb, but he hasn't put it together yet. In the first moto, he got a terrible start and rode in formation with the pack for several laps. But he turned it up at the halfway point and passed a big pack, moving from eighth to second at the finish. He had a better start in moto two· but crashed just three turns into the race. "The crash shook him up a little," said his mechanic James Coy. "He cramped up a little. But he'lI be okay." Jesseman charged back to 11th. ~lg) U C£) Brock Sellards 17th (ll-DNS) Sellards had speed at Unadilla, but he didn't have health. Suffering from what his team described as "a bad flu," he was running as high as third in the first moto before fading back to eleventh. He elected not to ride the second moto. @1] {] Eric Sorby 39th (38-40) The creative Pro Circuit Kawasaki Frenchman rode aggressively in the first moto, battling with teammate Mike Brown and Suzuki's Jesseman, but a big crash on the seventh lap ended his drive, and his moto, when his radiator was crushed. He was back and struggling in the second moto and was actually blackflagged by the AMA officials for running off the track in an attempt to short-cut the course. LB 1] Andrew Short at the tail of the top 10, passed everyone in front of him and emerged with the lead by lap two. He leapt past Hughes at the beginning of a long sweeper in the back and then drew all the way up to Anderson's rear wheel and passed him in the next corner. "The roost here hurts," Stewart said. "I didn't want to be behind anyone." The race for the win was over, but a battle was about to emerge among the KTM trio of Hughes, Langston and Metcalfe. They each displaced Anderson and began to fight with one another. Brown was outside of the top 10 but riding much more aggressively than the first mota. Hughes was able to hold second until about the halfway point, when he started to tire. Langston attacked, and Metcalfe was right with him. The three-way KTM fight often sawall three bikes side by side on the wide Unadilla track. Langston passed Hughes in a sweeper leading to Gravity Cavity, and then Metcalfe picked a new line and nearly jumped past both of them over the big jump.
