AMA/Chevy Trucks 250cc U.S. Motocross Championship Round 7: Unadilla Valley Sports Center and Cernic's KTM's John Dowd (8-11) rounded out the top 10. "I heard the cheers that Kevin was getting for beating me, and I think it's definitely good for the sport," said Carmichael at the end of the day. "I think sometimes when you have a good string like that going, people want to see how long you can do it. Win or lose, I think the fans still got what they wanted to see - which was a good race between me and Kevin." "Even before the season, during testing, 1 knew that I could do it, but racing Ricky is going to be a race to the end," Windham said. "I was faster than him today, but it doesn't have anything to do with next weekend [at Washougal, where Windham beat Carmichael last in 2001]. But now 1 know that I can do it. I felt that pressure today, and I dealt with it and overcame it. That's a big weight off my shoulders going into the rest of the season. I have a whole new mentality towards racing, and I crossed a big hurdle today. It's a good feeling." CN Windham's comeback was completed with his seventh 250cc National win. "Actually, I got a great start," Vuillemin said. "I was second off the gate, but I stalled the bike in the first turn, so I had to restart and was dead last. I also fell in the middle of the race. J got up to fifth, so it was pretty good. I gave 100 percent, and the bike is working awesome. The team's been working really hard to set it up the right way, and it's up to me now. I'm really happy with my ride." Vuillemin's second moto went even better, as he started the race fourth before quickly sweeping around Carmichael and Reed to take over the runner-up spot. Carmichael moved back by before the close of the opening lap, but Vuillemin stayed strong throughout the moto. A mid-race pass by Ferry dropped Vuillemin to fourth, and that's where he finished. "I think today I rode pretty good," 10 JULY 30.2003' c: y c: • e Vuillemin said. passed Ricky and Chad in the same turn and was running second. I don't have the pace of Kevin and Ricky yet, but I'm happy to be in the top five. I felt like I wanted to go after Timmy after he passed me, but I was a little bit tired after my first moto, because I gave a lot to be able to catch up from the back. It's getting better and better. After my back injury, j'm really happy. I'm improving every weekend, and it's getting better and better. The pace was really fast today." n e _ s Rounding out the top five overall was yet another Team Yamaha rider, Reed. The Aussie looked fast and smooth throughout the day but was still well off the pace of the leaders. Reed started the first moto in about seventh, and a few laps later he moved past MotoXXX's Kyle Lewis and Plotts and into fifth. A late-moto pass by Vuillemin dropped Reed to sixth just before the finish. In moto two, Reed rounded Unadilla's sweeping first turn just behind the leader, Windham, before being dropped to fourth by Vuillemin and Carmichael in the very next turn. An early pass by the hard-charging Ferry put Reed into fifth, where he rode out the remainder of the moto pretty much unchallenged. "It was an okay day," Reed said. "I feel like my riding is getting a little bit better as the series goes on. Each week we work on the problems we're having, and it seems like we're making progress. I'll go back to California this week and work on things some more to try to get back to where I want to be, which is winning races and being up front." Lusk was sixth overall (4-9), followed by Amsoil/Chaparral Honda's Mike LaRocco, who went 7 -7 for seventh. Blackfoot Honda's JeanSebastien Roy (12-6), Lewis (9-10) Unadilla Va"ey Sports Center Ne.
