Kentucky Dirt Track Series Round 11: Carson Parle McFadden's the Man! By BOBBY Old Bridge Township Raceway Park: American Suzuki's Jason Lawrence totally dominated four classes at the 18th annual New Jersey State Championships, held near Englishtown, New Jersey. New Jersey State Championships Old Bridge Township Raceway Parle Four for Four for Lawrence By MATT WOZNEY ENGLISHTOWN, NJ, JUNE 22 Rain, rain, rain: That's what the Northeast has received from Mother Nature for the past few weeks, and the track at the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park was a mudbath. With showers on and off throughout the whole day, it seemed that the track would get even worse and more slick; however, with the sand and hay that Kenny Landerman and his crew put on the track, it turned out that the track was in almost perfect shape for the New Jersey State Motocross Championship race. One racer who battled through the mud and eventually took four overall wins was American Suzuki/No Fear rider Jason Lawrence. The rider from Estell Manor, New Jersey, was on a roll at Raceway Park. He was able to defeat some of the best riders from the Northeast and take home four championships. Lawrence swept the 85cc (14-15), Supennini and Schoolboy classes. all with 1-1 finishes. In the 125cc Amateur class. he placed second in the first moto, behind Kawasaki rider John Giantonio. Aboard his FMF/PR2-prepped RM 100, Lawrence then beat Giantonio in the second moto and earned the overall victory in that class. As for Giantonio, he flew in the 250cc Amateur class, dominating both motos with leads of more than 20 seconds in each. Lawrence wasn't the only Suzuki rider to do well in this Suzuki·sponsored event. Anoth· er Suzuki rider who showed dominance was National number 79. Barry Carsten. The Bromley Suzuki rider swept the Over 30 Expert class and also won the 125cc and 250cc Pro Expert classes with 1-2 finishes. Despite bad starts in most of his motos, Carsten was able to sneak his way through the field and move up to the front. Finishing behind Carsten in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro Expert classes was RRP·backed National number 85. Ty Wallace, who finished with a 4-1 tally in both of those classes aboard his Yamaha YZ250F and Honda CRF450R. Wallace also managed to sweep the Over 25 Expert class with 1- I finishes. Taking victories in the 65cc (10-11) and 85cc (10- 11) classes was KTM factory rider Justin Barcia. The Moroney's Cycle/Holeshot Graphics·backed rider went 1- 1 for the overall win in the 85cc (10-11) class aboard his KTM 85. However, in the 65cc (10-11) class, Barcia had some bad luck in the first moto and handed the win to Suzuki rider Frank Letteri, while Barcia finished third. Barcia then came back in the second moto in dominating fash· ion to win the moto and the overall, over Let· teri and KTM rider Jesse Kuzbyt, who finished with a solid 2·2. Letteri went 1·3, and Barcia went 3-1. The youngest class of the day was the 65cc (7-9) class. Suzuki rider Nick Desiderio took the overall win. over ThorjFMF rider Tyler Wozney. Desiderio had some problems in the first moto and finished second, behind Wozney. but in the second moto, Wozney and Desiderio were out in front until Desiderio fell in the sandy corner known as the Southwick Turn and handed the lead to Wozney. Then Wozney led the race until a few turns before the checkered flag, when Desiderio was able to use lappers to his advantage on the muddy track and get around Wozney. Desiderio won the moto and the overall. while a disappointed Wozney took second overall with a 1-2 tally. Old Bridge Township Raceway Park Englishtown. New Jersey Results: June 22, 2003 65 (7-9): I. Steve Nace and crew had the track in absolutely perfect condition for the large turnout. The first class to hit the track was that of the SOcc shaft· drive machines, using the fronl straightaway as a short track. After heats whit· tied the field down to 12 riders, Nick McFadden sat on the pole. When the light flashed, McFadden went to the front and never looked back, lapping up into the pack on his way to the win. After a lot of jockeying for position, Jace Faugno settled firmly into second, over Landon Woley. Carson Anderson held on for fourth. over Timothy Grief. Destin McDonald. Mason Woley and Victoria Whyback. The best ride of the night came in the Open Amateur class. Heat·race winner Jere~ my Anderson found himself buried in the back as the pack hit turn one. Jeremy went to the cushion and picked off riders two at a time to work to the front and take the win. Jason Schlesinger put in a good ride for second. over Tyler Porter, Kenny Groh and Kyle Naliborski. Jason Goodwin was clipping the hay bales as he rode the top of the track in wide·open fashion in the Open Pro·Am class. The first start found the red flag flying after two riders went down hard coming off turn two. Aaron Ladd was out for the night with a badly battered motorcycle: everyone else regridded. Goodwin went to the top on the restart and had to hold off a late charge by Chase Sconyers to take the win. Ben Morton slid into third, over Jeremy. Naliborski and Groh. Brad Furlong had followed Goodwin's tine earlier in the night, and he used it to top the Open Pro class. Furlong, Goodwin and Sconyers ran bar to bar for the entire race, with Furlong taking the win. Coty Bowland landed in fourth after holding off Stephen Hartzel at the iine. Jeff Jones led every lap en route to taking the Vet-class win. over Mike Dunaway, Dean Faulkner, Bill Gruwell and Gene Yopp. Bill Zentmeyer went I and 1 in heat and main in the Senior class. He grabbed the lead down the back straight and left Yopp to hold off Dennis Porter, David Brown and Donald Durrett for second. J.T. Woods captured the Super Senior win, over Ciyde Modlin. Dunaway returned in the '70s Singles class to run away with the win, over Faulkner, Phil Elken and Nathan Curnel. Rod Hartzel used a potent Triumph to win the Heavy Vintage final, over Charlie South· gate, while Steve Atwell topped the Lightweights. Justin Hanna and Zach Oliffe ran wheel to wheel in the 200cc Amateur final. Oliffe had a better line going in, but Hanna got the drive off the last corner to take the win. The Heiden boys, Jonathan and Michael, followed in that order. Jonathan came back to notch the victo· ry in the 200 Pro-Am main after a close battle with Oliffe. Chris Ragan rode to third, over Mike Heiden and Hanna. Oliffe got the win he was looking for in the 85cc class. He nailed the start and held off Jonathan at the flag to take the win. A short distance back, Cody Brown held on to third, over Jake Lewis, Nikki Spore, Jesse Tabor, Mike Heiden and Blake Moore. Lewis came back to dominate the 65cc and SOcc chain classes. Nathaniel Vowell and Dylan Lowery followed Lewis in the 65cc division. while McFadden and Josh Grief chased him in the SOcc class. Tyler Porter made it look easy in the 250cc Amateur ranks, taking a runaway win. Things were definitely hot behind him. as Dakota Simmons emerged from a five-rider frenzy to place second, over Michael Stalvey, Jordan Jenkel, Tracy Gibbs and Tony Graham. Gibbs rebounded to card a perfect night in the Trail Rider class, while Caleb Ballard vast· Iy improved from his heat-race finishes to run second. Brian Neblett held off Sean Smith. Brett Tapley and Dustin Medly for third. Simmons would sit on top of the box in the Mad Dog feature, while Colby Chandler bested Jessie Hodge and April Ladd to win the XR 100 Stock class. The last race of the night was the Jimmy Grief Memorial Dash For Cash. Jimmy was a very devoted dirt·track man and was probably the one most responsible for keeping it running in the years that rider turnout was low_ This race will be an annual reminder of the time he spent helping the sport grow. When the light turned green for this four·lap dash. Furlong was more than ready, and he put in perfect laps to take the win and the money. over Sconyers and Goodwin.
