kicker then hammered on the throttle. The R1 was screaming as he reached The Ledge, and he never backed off. He flew way up in the air as he tried to keep from flipping over; then he landed hard. Man and machine bounced hard, but he wheelied through the lights in 6.764 seconds to end the round. "I had planned on rolling The Ledge; then I watched Jammer [Large] and made a last-second decision," Strank said. "I got up there and said, 'To hell with it,' and kept it pinned and caught way too much air, and it was still good enough for a 6.7." The hill was rutted badly for the second round, but two riders stepped it up. Disbennet and his father Doyle were busy at intermission. "We put on the lowest gearing we have ever run." Disbennet said. "I could have used even lower gearing, as it turned out. I pulled three wheelies before I got to The Ledge, so I took it easy over the jump and wheelied twice more before the lights." Disbennet still claimed third overall with his second run of 6.842 seconds. Bobby Templeton followed Disbennet with his best Haydenville finish ever, taking fourth with a 7.001-second pass. Watson tried for the win, but his run was over quickly. "I tried to jump off the first breaker like I did to win the 540," Watson said. "Then I jumped too far. I landed in those ruts, and that was all she wrote." Watson's first round time held up for fifth. Large paced near the pit as Strank rolled in for his final run. Strank ran into problems right off the line. "The right side of the hill was a lot softer than I thought," Strank said. "Today was a rider's hill, and finishing behind Watson and Jammer is pretty good." Large and his family and friends celebrated the victory. "Tom Reiser has been working hard on my bike, and it all came together today for us," Large said. "I hope we can keep it going." eN 2003 Greasy Ridge Haydenville, Ohio Results: July 13, 2003 IRound 51 800: I. James Large (H·O); 2. Walter Strank Jr. (Yam); 3. Chad Disbennelt (Tri): 4.
