Delta Park Raceway By JUSTIN WHARTON PORTLAND, OR, JUNE 26 Known as one of the next up-and-coming Pros in the Northwest, the Fly/Holeshot Designssponsored Dale Ainslie backed up his reputation with a perfect four-moto sweep at Delta Park Raceway. Joshua Johnson, the 14-yearold phenom, did the same in the Intermediate classes. In the first moto of the combined Over The Hill Intermediate, 125cc Pro and Intermediate contest. Ainslie absconded with the holeshot, followed by Eric Loney and Intermediate racer Johnson. Though Johnson was passed by third-placed Pro rider Tyson Lindeman, Johnson wasn't going to give up without a fight, and the two were locked in a battle for most of the race. Following Johnson were the rest of the Intermediate riders ~ Eric Turner, Chris Holum and James Barret, all battling it out. When the checkers came out, it was Ainslie with the victory. followed by Loney in second and Lindeman in third. In the second moto, Ainslie snagged another holeshot, with Loney and Holum in tow. Ainslie had it a little rougher in this mota, as Loney never gave him a moment to rest and was constantly on his tail. The Moto Out· fitters/MSR/Scott/Pro Motion Suspensionbacked Johnson fell on the second lap but found some fire within and started picking off riders until he came up on the battling Holum and Lindeman. Johnson flashed by Lindeman. Then Holum almost flipped over on a small single jump, and Johnson went by him for third. Just before the white flag, the Hondamounted Loney sneaked by Ainslie when the latter made a mistake, and the two went at each other; Ainslie got by just in time to take the win. In the second gate of riders, Mike Hamness was out in front, and his only competition was the National number 667, Suzuki rider Don Bisceglia. Following the two Pros were Darby Heck, Rick Walling and Darrel Famer, all battling for the coveted second·place position. Ainslie won the Pro class with a 1·1 tally, while Loney (2-2) picked up second overall, and the O'Neal/EVS-sponsored Lindeman (3-3) took third. Johnson (1-1) won the Intermediate class, followed by Holum (2-2) and Barret (4-3) in second and third, respectively. Turner's bike malfunctioned in the second moto, but he garnered fourth with a 3-DNF score. In the Over the Hill Intermediate class, Hamness (1-1) took the win, followed by Bisceglia (2·2) in second. and rounding out the podium was Heck. Finishing fourth was Walling (4-4), and Darrel Farner (5-5) was flfth. Results 50 (4-6): I. Samuel Mercer (KTM): 2. Shaden Nugent (KTM): 3. Keltin Boykin (KTM): 4. Ryder Woite (KTM): 5. Scott County Fairgrounds: Joe Hurd (799) and Jeff Doyle (197) jockey for position off the start of the Pro race at round 12 of the Motokazie Midwest Supercross Series in Jordan, Minnesota. orr Orr orr Doyle appeared to have the best chance. He made up time like a morning commuter late for work, but he couldn't make the pass, either. Hurd shut the door every time Doyle made a move. His last move was a costly one, as Doyle found himself with his bike upSide down and in eighth place, to boot. With Doyle out, it was Tony Traxler's turn. He, too, had multiple opportunities, but Hurd would fend him off as well. Traxler had to settle for third, while Eddie Gregory passed Mueller for fourth. The main was over before it started. as Ohland took off and didn't look back, which left the battle for everything but first. A pile-up in the first tum on the first lap left several rid~ ers out of commission, including Hurd, Tyler Neese and Tim Myre. This gave the crowd two things to watch: the battle for second, between Traxler and Doyle; and just how unbelievably fast Brett Ohland is. From there on out, it was clear-cut as to who would finish where. Mueller improved on his qualifler to flnish fourth overall. Doyle, flnishing third, couldn't quite put it together, as Traxler made fewer mistakes on his way to second. Ohland, despite his massive lead, never slowed his pace on the way to an easy victory. With only two races remaining at this par· ticular venue for 2003, racers are running out of opportunities to exorcise their grudges and prove who really is the king of Jordan Super· cross. Scott County Fairgrounds Ohland Owns Jordan Supercross By CHAD DRESSEN JORDAN, MN, JUNE 27 Round 12 of the Motokazie Midwest Supercross Series brought about many quality races. For the true race fan, a 50cc oil-injected consolation can be just as exciting as a Pro main event, but, as we've come to expect, the drama in the Pro class (on and off the track) can make for some interesting racing_ Those who are not familiar with Motokazie's Supercross Series must understand one thing: With 41 races over six months, most riders must strategically pick and choose which events they will focus on in search of the almighty point. With the most stops in Jordan, Minnesota. many consider it somewhat of a rendezvous point for the "regulars." One can imagine the week-to-week battles among the local Pros. It should be said that the great battles happened from second place on back to eighth, as Brett Ohland checked out seemingly before the gate even dropped. Joe Hurd grabbed second place in the heat race and held on to it, but the rest of the pack took turns trying to overthrow him. First was Joey Mueller; he negotiated several different lines over the course of a couple of laps to make things interesting. but he couldn't quite make the pass. This seemed to discourage Mueller, as he fell off the pace just a bit, giving way to the next contestant - Jeff Doyle. " For those familiar with the history of speedway, Sevart's nickname is o~viousJy intended to invoke the memory of the sport's most famous Ivan, New Zealand's Ivan Mauger. who once ruled the international speedway world, winning a record six individ~ ual championships between 1968 and 1979. Sevart's solid victory aboard his Affordable RV/Off Beat Productions/Arai-backed Jawa was anything but a cakewalk, however, as week five's Handicap main-event winner, J.J. Martynse, closed the gap from his 20-yard starting position to post an unnervingly close second-place finish. The 1998 SRA Nationai Speedway Champion, Bart "Simpson" Bast, was right behind Martynse for third. Bobby "The Blaze" Hedden was credited with fourth, just ahead of former Junior (Youth) Speedway Champions Bryan Yarrow and Eric CarriUo. Aithough Hedden finished toward the back in the Handicap main, he made up for it with a nifty starting·tapes-to-checkered-flag win in the Scratch main event. Coming out of gate three after starting from lane four in both his heat race and the Scratch semi, Hedden nailed the start and virtually bagged the race in the first turns. Bast. who missed the start from lane four, came from the back of the pack to claim the second-place points for the third consecutive week. Former Junior rider UJ a: 8 z " 'l" ;; UJ ~ ~ Cha~.
