Genuine Suzuki Accessories Superstock Round 8: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Pridmore said. "I knew that if I could get by him, I knew that I could get away from him. And that's what I did. I snuck underneath him in turn 10 [on the seventh lap]. That was the end of it. " The most entertaining battle was the one for fourth, Hayden against Attack Suzuki's Josh Hayes and Valvoline EMGO Suzuki's Steve Rapp. The three hooked up for much of the race. On the 13th lap, Hayden took fourth from Hayes then held him off at the line by less than .3 seconds, with Rapp just .151 behind in sixth. Buckmaster made a mistake in serving his stop-and-go penalty on the second lap. Instead of waiting for the field to spread out, Buckmaster came in while the pack was still tightly bunched, dropping from sixth to 26th. The next six laps were spent fighting through traffic before he settled in eighth on the eighth lap, too far back to make a run at Zemke. The most excitement in the race came on the third lap when Buckmaster's teammate Jamie Hacking took Bruce Transportation Group's Marty Craggill in the Corkscrew. "I got rammed from behind going into the corkscrew by Jamie FIo@#ing Hacking," Craggill said, his sore right wrist wrapped in ice. "I don't know what to say. The guy's a f*&%ing idiot. He does it to someone every week. I passed him, and the next minute he smashes into me. I was just going into the Corkscrew, and the next minute I was flying through the air. He does it to someone every week, and every week it's someone else, and every week he gets away with it, and the AMA doesn't do anything about it, and the riders don't do anything about it." eN LOCKHART·PHILLIPS USA FORMULA XTREME: 1. MONTEREY, CA, JULY 13 osh Hayes came within .028 seconds of extending his four-year victory drought by another race. Instead, he used the power of his Attack Suzuki GSX-R750 to drive by the Kawasaki ZX-6RR of Tommy Hayden on the run' from the final turn to the checkered flag to win the Genuine Suzuki Accessories Superstock final at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. "The last race I won was on a Suzuki in 750 Supersport in Daytona in 1999," Hayes said of his only other AMA Pro win. "That one, everything fell in place, and it seemed to come really easy. I had a couple of more that I thought were going to happen in the last ·couple of years, and one thing or another - a motorcycle break, a red flag or something . has always kept me on the second or third step of the podium. It's just been circumstance. We've been getting a lot of pole positions, and we've been one of the fastest guys." j n e 'IV sa In Monterey, he took another pole and jetted into the lead at the start of the 17 -lap main. Quickly there was a three-rider breakaway, Hayes leading Hayden and Corona Extra EBSCO Media Suzuki's Adam Fergusson, with Hayden's teammate Tony Meiring a lonely fourth, and a battle royale over fifth. Fergusson took second on the third lap and appeared to gap Hayden after a few laps, but it wasn't the case. Hayden closed back up and passed him on the 11 th lap. "The thing was going really good until about middistance, and I started to get a little push from the front," Fergusson said. "Sticking it in all of these corners at the speed we do, I didn't really want to crash out of third place, or even out of second. I had to roll off a little bit, and Tommy [Hay· den] got by me. I tried to stick with him, but he was riding really good really quick. I actually dropped back a little bit and kept my eye on the board to make sure the guys behind me weren't catching me, and I Josh Hayes (4) led the AMA Superstock race right off and then used a last-lap attack on Kawasaki 636-mounted Tommy Hayden (22) to take his second-ever AMA Pro win, by .028 of a second. brought it home and put it on the box." Fergusson finished 5.8 seconds behind Hayden. Once clear of Fergusson, Hayden set out after Hayes, closing up incrementally until he was on him for the final few laps, with traffic playing a part in his attack. Hayden knew if he took the lead he couldn't get away, so the plan was to wait for the final corner to attack. "I knew that I was good into the turn before that and I could get a run, so I knew it would be a good place to pass," Hayden said. Into the final bend, Hayes took a wide line, and Hayden dived to the inside, pinning the throttle for the run to the flag. Hayes swung back to the inside, Hayden's left, and just edged him at the line, his first victory in over four years secure.
